MHH and KRH establish ‘Hannover Lung and Thorax Centre’

The close cooperation between the clinics is intended to ensure the best possible care for patients – and to strengthen clinical research.

A centre of excellence for lung and thoracic medicine in Hannover – that is the joint goal of the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the Hannover Region Hospital (KRH). Both institutions signed a letter of intent today to establish the ‘Hannover Lung and Thoracic Centre’ (HLTC). The centre is set to become one of the largest and most efficient of its kind in Germany and will have an international reputation.

    Joint expertise

‘With the HLTC, we are responding jointly to the challenges of modern healthcare and the objectives of the current hospital reform, which envisages a greater concentration of medical services and closer networking between hospital locations,’ says Dr Matthias Bracht, KRH Managing Director of Medicine. Prof. Dr. Frank Lammert, Vice President of the MHH and responsible for its healthcare provision, emphasises: ‘For the people in the Hannover region and Lower Saxony, this cross-institutional cooperation means better access to excellent medical care. The HLTC combines the knowledge and experience of the best experts in the field of pulmonary and thoracic medicine in clinics and practices, who work hand in hand.’

    Two strong partners

The KRH and the MHH are already among the leading institutions in the care of patients with lung and respiratory diseases. For example, the pulmonology department at the KRH Siloah Clinic offers comprehensive basic and standard care with a focus on pulmonological oncology and respiratory medicine. MHH specialises in rare lung diseases and is internationally recognised for its expertise in lung transplantation and innovative procedures such as ECMO and biohybrid lung replacement. Both institutions are also strong in thoracic surgery. ‘As a university hospital, MHH can contribute the latest scientific findings and innovative therapies,’ said MHH President Prof. Dr. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner. ‘Joint management and the establishment of a professorship at the MHH are part of the initiative.’

    Optimal patient care

The HLTC will pool existing expertise and enable optimal patient care through coordinated services. Both hospitals already work closely together, for example in intensive care and respiratory medicine: The MHH has extensive intensive care capacities, while the KRH's weaning station is one of the largest in Germany.

Expansion to new areas of focus

The cooperation is intended not only to improve care, but also to strengthen clinical research. A joint patient pool will allow expansion to new areas of focus such as COPD, respiratory medicine and interventional bronchoscopy. In addition, cross-location training and continuing education will be intensified – with innovative teaching concepts and rotation programmes. The HLTC will be configured as a partnership structure without a legal merger of the participating institutions. The result will be a model for interdisciplinary, interprofessional and cross-institutional care.
