Evidence-based research and innovative approaches: MHH and the State Health Office intensify their cooperation.

The Lower Saxony State Health Office (NLGA) and Hannover Medical School (MHH) want to further intensify their scientific cooperation with the aim of sustainably improving the health of the population in Lower Saxony through evidence-based research and innovative approaches. MHH President Prof. Dr. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner and NLGA President Dr. Fabian Feil signed a corresponding memorandum of understanding today.

The aim is to establish closer links between the health authority and university medicine. This will promote both the exchange of specialist expertise and joint research projects in the fields of infectious diseases, hygiene, environmental medicine and public health, including crisis and pandemic planning. The next step will be to set out the details of the collaboration in a cooperation agreement.

MHH President Prof. Dr. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner emphasised the importance of cooperation agreements for the MHH, also with regard to its application as a University of Excellence: ‘The cooperation agreement with the State Health Office is a building block on MHH's path to becoming a national and international beacon for cutting-edge research. Close cooperation gives us the opportunity to implement practical research even better and to jointly meet the challenges in the healthcare sector.’

‘With this partnership, we are strengthening knowledge transfer between the public health service and science,’ emphasised Dr Fabian Feil. ‘In our key areas of focus, such as infection control, hygiene and public health, we hope that this cooperation will yield new and valuable insights that can be directly incorporated into measures and recommendations for the health of people in Lower Saxony.’

In future, the NLGA will be a cooperation partner of the new Competence Centre for Public Health, Primary Health Care and Health Services Research at the MHH. The integration of the NLGA's specialist content will strengthen the bridge between practice and theory, the use of scientific findings in public health and the healthcare system, as well as education, training and continuing professional development.

    Background:

As a supramaximal provider, Hannover Medical School (MHH) stands for excellent, patient-centred medicine, supported by science-based, translationally oriented teaching and interprofessional cooperation between all health professions. On the MHH campus, research, teaching and patient care operate at the highest level in an integrated model with close links between science and clinical practice. The MHH is one of the world's leading university hospitals in the fields of infection & immunity, transplantation & regeneration, and biomedical engineering & implant research. The MHH is Germany's only pure medical university to apply for the first time in the nationwide top research competition as a university of excellence.

The Lower Saxony State Health Office (NLGA) is the central authority of the state of Lower Saxony for communicable and non-communicable diseases and health risks to the population. The NLGA's mission is to promote and protect the health of the people of Lower Saxony, both as a whole and as individuals. From a public health perspective, the NLGA examines factors that influence health and, with the help of its interdisciplinary expertise on the development, transmission and prevention of diseases, makes recommendations for political decisions, long-term strategies and concrete measures. As a specialist authority, the NLGA provides advice to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Health, health authorities and other institutions in the health sector.
