"ANWAR IBRAHIM AND THE FUTURE OF POLITICAL ISLAM IN ASIA"
Anwar Ibrahim was the former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Malaysia. In 1998 he was removed from office and subsequently arrested and imprisoned on charges of abuse of power. During his arrest, Anwar was physically abused by members of the Malaysian police force. The trial of Anwar Ibrahim was noted by Malaysian and foreign observers alike as being both irregular and politically-motivated. Anwar himself maintains that it was part of a conspiracy to remove him from power and to halt the advance of the reformist, pro-democracy movement in Malaysia.
Anwar began his career as an Islamist democratic activist, and later entered politics in 1982. Following his removal from office he and his followers formed the National Justice (Keadilan) Party of Malaysia. He is still regarded as one of the most progressive Muslim thinkers and leaders in Asia today.
Anwar was released from prison in early September and is now in Germany seeking medical treatment for the abuse he received during his arrest. The forum will allow members of the press/media to meet and discuss with Sivarasa Rasiah, one of the Vice-Presidents of Anwar's Justice party. Sivarasa is also one of the leading human rights activists and pro-democracy advocates in the country.
The forum hopes to raise awareness of current developments in Malaysia and the future of the pro-democracy, reformist movement in Malaysia and the ASEAN region.
SIVARASA RASIAH is a senior Lawyer and former member of the Malaysian Bar Council. He served as the lawyer for Anwar Ibrahim and is a leading lawyer in Malaysia on public interest court cases. He is a founding member of the National Human Rights Society (HAKAM) which was initiated by former Prime Ministers Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Hussein Onn; a founding member and director of the Human Rights NGO SUARAM and the Institute for Democracy and Reform. He is at present the Vice-President of the National Justice Party (Keadilan).
Dr. FARISH A. NOOR is a Malaysian political scientist and human rights activist who has been studying the phenomenon of political Islam in the Asian region. He has written extensively about the need for reform and democratisation in Muslim societies and is the author of 'Islam Embedded: The Historical Development of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS)', (MSRI, 2004, 2 volumes). He is based at the Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO), Berlin.
