Strengthening the mathematical basis of artificial intelligence
Mathematician Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Peter Benner, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg and Head of the Department of Numerical Methods in System and Control Theory, was elected as a member by the General Assembly of acatech, the German Academy of Science and Engineering, in October 2025.
The German Academy of Science and Engineering works independently, evidence-based and in the public interest, advising German politics and society with the aim of achieving sustainable growth through innovation. It also acts as the voice of technical sciences abroad, across national borders.
Uncovering the treasures of applied mathematics for engineering and AI applications
Prof. Peter Benner is delighted about his election to acatech and says about his motivation: ‘Mathematics is the basis of many developments in engineering sciences and AI. My motivation is to raise the hidden treasures of applied mathematics and make them accessible for further applications.’
Such AI-based prediction models are used, among other applications, within digital twins, i.e. in virtual mathematical simulations of real processes, for example in chemical process engineering in collaboration with research groups at the MPI.
Peter Benner's current research interests include scientific machine learning, numerical linear and multilinear algebra, model order reduction and reduced-order modeling, numerical methods in systems and control theory, PDE constrained optimization, high-performance computing and power-aware computing, and mathematical software.
He is the author of over 700 publications in journals and books, co-editor of several publications and mathematical journals, and co-author of various software packages. He is an active member of leading German and international mathematical associations, such as the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM).
The Certificate of Membership will be officially conferred at the next acatech General Assembly in Berlin in October 2026.
Another full member of acatech is in the ranks of the Max Planck Institute in Magdeburg. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern, director at the MPI until 2024 and now emeritus scientific member of the Max Planck Society, was admitted in 2013.
About acatech - National Academy of Science and Engineering
Funded by the Federal Government and the Länder, acatech – National Academy of Science and Engineering is the voice of the technological sciences at home and abroad. They provide advice on strategic engineering and technology policy issues to policymakers and the public.
acatech brings together science, industry and civil society. The currently 600 Academy’s Members are prominent scientists from the fields of engineering, the natural sciences and medicine, as well as the humanities and social sciences.
