Starting in Winter Semester 2026/27, the elite master’s programme Ecological Forecasting (M.Sc.) will train the next generation of experts to predict ecological changes with a focus on the data-driven models, validation, and continuous improvement.
The new Ecological Forecasting programme is a unique offering geared towards students who want to model, understand and actively shape ecological change. The aim of the programme is to train a new generation of scientific leaders who can develop and critically evaluate robust, data-informed forecasts. Students learn how carefully tested and validated predictions are made and how these support decision-makers in responding to global change responsibly and effectively.
To achieve this goal, theoretical and methodological approaches from ecology, statistics, computer science and decision sciences are combined in an adaptive management concept. In this way, students develop the skills needed to formulate forecasts and to continuously validate and optimise them using newly available data. "In view of the profound ecological changes taking place, our society urgently needs experts who can master this challenge competently and with foresight," emphasises Prof. Dr Steven Higgins, programme coordinator and Professor of Plant Ecology at the University of Bayreuth.
Unique profile and interdisciplinary orientation
The programme invites applications from bachelor's degree holders in the life sciences, earth sciences, data science, computer science and decision sciences (e.g. economics or philosophy) who have an interest in ecological issues and quantitative methods.
The programme is well-suited for graduates of traditional bachelor's programmes – such as biology with a specialisation in ecology – as well as students with a methodological focus who wish to apply their skills in data-informed forecasting and adaptive management of ecological systems.
