Plastics made from agricultural waste: IfBB presents its latest research at the 2026 Hannover Messe

Dr. Lisa Mundzeck IfBB - Institut für Biokunststoffe und Bioverbundwerkstoffe
Hochschule Hannover

What alternative raw materials can be used in the production of plastics? The IfBB at Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts will be demonstrating how agricultural waste offers potential as a raw material for the plastics of the future at the Hannover Messe from 20 to 24 April, at the MWK’s exhibition stand in Hall 11, Stand B56. Please come and visit us!

How can we produce more sustainable plastics? Bio-based plastics are made not only from renewable raw materials grown specifically for this purpose, but agricultural and industrial waste also offers great potential.

Through two current research projects, the IfBB – Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites at Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts is using rushes and asparagus peelings to clearly demonstrate how we can successfully utilise agricultural waste to conserve resources, and how we can simultaneously use it in a targeted manner to influence the properties of plastics.

In the “I-RoBi” project, rushes are used as a sustainable raw material for insulation or fillers in plastic compounds. I-RoBi is developing processing and further treatment methods and presenting practical application scenarios to highlight the potential for industrial use. The aim is to establish regional value creation using locally sourced raw materials that can also withstand the challenges of climate change.

The SpaPlast II project works with asparagus as a waste product in the plastics processing industry. The aim is the scalable, sustainable use of asparagus-reinforced materials – efficiently, in a resource-efficient manner and competitively. In this way, not only can fossil resources be conserved, but previously discarded waste materials can also be put to profitable use, both for industry as a raw material and for agriculture as a further market.

Come and visit us at the exhibition stand of the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony in Hall 11, Stand B56. We look forward to seeing you!

“I-RoBi – Utilising the industrial raw material rush from peatland sites” is funded by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Agriculture as part of the European Innovation Partnership “Productivity and Sustainability in Agriculture” (EIP Agri).

“SpaPlast II – Follow-up project to investigate the processing and utilisation of asparagus secondary products for bio-based semi-finished extrusion products” is funded by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Lower Saxony using funds from the Stadt. Land.ZUKUNFT “Economic Development Fund – Environmental Sector” to support the implementation of the state’s biologisation strategy “New Paths for a Sustainable Lower Saxony”: https://www.ml.niedersachsen.de/stadtlandzukunft/stadt-land-zukunft-209768.html
