Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology launches English-language degree program focused on practical skills, real-world systems, and career readiness
Shopping, communication, transportation, and many other parts of everyday life increasingly take place online. This creates vast amounts of data - and a growing need for systems that can process, analyze, and turn that data into useful information. Companies across industries are looking for professionals who can design and build these systems
The Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (BHT) is responding to this demand with its new English-language bachelor’s degree program in Data Engineering. The program prepares students to develop practical systems that handle large volumes of data and generate meaningful insights - from recommendation systems in online retail to automated data analysis tools used in business and industry.
Throughout the six-semester program, students build a strong foundation in programming, distributed system engineering, and data processing. They work progressively on applications that mirror the kinds of systems used in real companies, giving them hands-on experience with the technologies and workflows needed in professional environments.
“Our students learn in a practical and pragmatic way how to design, build, and operate distributed systems that process large amounts of data and enable Machine Learning applications,” says Petra Sauer, professor and dean of the computer science department at BHT. The program is designed as an accessible entry point for motivated students. It can also serve as the first step in a longer academic pathway at BHT: graduates may continue into the Master’s Program in Data Science and, subsequently, pursue doctoral research through BHT’s newly established doctoral center.
“The Data Engineering program is specifically designed for people who may have little prior experience in mathematics or computer science,” says Prof. Dr. Zbigniew Jerzak, academic advisor for the program. “What matters is curiosity about how systems work, motivation to solve problems, and a willingness to engage with technology and develop it further.”
By combining technical foundations with practical application, the program aims to prepare graduates for a strong start in careers where data, software, and scalable software systems come together.
