Partnership Between Heidelberg and Harvard: Implementation of Initial Projects Begins
23 joint initiatives selected for funding – focus on long-term cooperation
The strategic partnership between Heidelberg University and Harvard University is now seeing the launch of the first joint projects by researchers from the two institutions. In August 2025, their respective leading representatives had signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to broaden the existing cooperation. 23 initiatives were chosen for funding in the first selection procedure. They are intended to deepen established cooperation arrangements through joint research, to build on transatlantic networks and drive forward projects with great scientific momentum. Project funding started on 1 April 2026.
“The partnership-related projects form the core of the scientific collaboration between our universities. They aim to establish lasting research cooperation agreements, promote innovative, interdisciplinary approaches and strengthen the chances of early-career researchers,” underlines Prof. Dr Frauke Melchior, Rector of Heidelberg University. This alliance will seek to foster broad and meaningful collaborations between the two institutions. “The partnership between our University of Excellence in Heidelberg and the renowned Harvard University is evolving from a strategic agreement into a concrete and effective platform for cutting-edge international research – exactly as we envisioned with our state initiative, ‘Global Partnership in Science’, as a symbol of international and independent scientific collaboration. This close cooperation at the highest level also demonstrates that Baden-Württemberg is an outstanding hub for science and research with global appeal,” adds science minister Petra Olschowski.
30 project applications were submitted in the partnership’s first call for interest. In a competitive procedure, a joint commission of the two universities selected 23 projects for funding. Seven projects in the program line “Strategic Partnership Grant” aim to expand institutional cooperation agreements. The program line “Explorer Seed Fund” will finance 16 projects with immediate scientific momentum. In all, around 220 academics are involved – mainly in early career phases. 130 of them pursue their research at Heidelberg University and 90 are members of Harvard University. The first visits by United States researchers are planned for the 2026 summer semester, while most of the visiting researchers are expected in Heidelberg during the 2026/2027 winter semester.
The 23 projects now being funded cover a wide range of disciplines at Heidelberg University. In all, applications were approved from nine different faculties. Medicine is a particular focus with nine successful applications. Here some of the initiatives build on longstanding partnerships – for example in the area of Global Health. The projects are planned to run for up to 24 months. A further call for applications will follow in the near future.
The strategic partnership has a time-honored foundation: Harvard University has for decades been the U.S. university with which Heidelberg University maintains the most extensive relations of active cooperation. It was based on this historical cooperation that the leading bodies of the two universities resolved to enter into strategic partnership in August 2025. The state of Baden-Württemberg is supporting the partnership in the context of the science ministry’s “Global Partnership in Science” activities and providing a total of ten million euros in funding.
