In an era of climate change and growing pressure on water resources, how can water bodies and water resources be protected and managed in a sustainable manner? And how can research generate robust knowledge for practical application? These questions lie at the heart of two conferences which are taking place simultaneously in Berlin for the first time between 14 and 18 September 2026. The 41st Annual Meeting of the German Society for Limnology (DGL) and the 16th Water Research Horizon Conference (WRHC) organised by the Water Science Alliance are being hosted by the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), in collaboration with the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
The German Society for Limnology (DGL) and the Water Science Alliance (WSA) are two of the most important networks in the field of German aquatic and water research. Together, they aim to encourage interdisciplinary exchange and link scientific findings more closely with practical requirements.
“Both events focus on transforming scientific findings into knowledge that is both societally relevant and practically useful. In the face of increasingly complex water-related challenges, it is crucial to present research findings in such a way that they can have a practical impact,” explained Professor Michael Hupfer. He is a researcher at IGB and has been President of the DGL since the beginning of the year. The joint theme of the upcoming conferences is therefore ‘Theoria cum praxi – shaping | water | futures’.
From 14 to 18 September, the DGL Annual Meeting will focus particularly on inland waters. More than twenty special sessions show the breadth of current limnological issues, covering topics such as changes in biodiversity, hydrodynamic processes, multiple stressors and water body assessment. The programme will discuss the latest scientific findings and proven and innovative approaches to current practical challenges.
On 14 and 15 September, the WRHC broadens this perspective to encompass overarching issues in water research. Different disciplines and institutions will come together to establish new connections between various fields of research. Four sessions will address topics that are crucial for sustainable water research, such as the use of new data sources, including AI and citizen science; the modelling of the water cycle in human-shaped landscapes; and the question of which reference conditions are still meaningful and achievable for the protection and development of water bodies.
Joint exchange in Berlin-Adlershof
Participants from both events will meet at the Erwin Schrödinger Centre in the Berlin-Adlershof Science and Technology Park for a joint forum. They will be able to move between the sessions of both events, and the plenary talks, breaks and networking event will also be organised jointly. This setting allows scientific insights to address specific water-related issues and, conversely, enables practical challenges to provide new impetus for research.
“The major water challenges cannot be solved by new data or new technologies alone. It is crucial to bring together scientific findings from different disciplines with perspectives from practice and management. Only then we can ensure that freshwater ecosystems remain functional and resilient in the long term, despite changing climatic, ecological and societal conditions,” said IGB Director Professor Sonja Jähnig.
The two conferences thus highlight what is essential for the sustainable management of water bodies and water resources: robust data, a comprehensive understanding and close collaboration between those who conduct research and those who manage, use and protect water bodies and water resources.
