From 28 September to 2 October, legal professionals and academics from all over the world will gather at HU. The congress brings together all areas of law and, in addition to academic issues, will also discuss topics of relevance to society as a whole.
The General Congress of the Académie internationale de droit comparé / International Academy of Comparative Law takes place every four years – it was last held in Germany in 1962. In 2026, Humboldt University of Berlin (HU) will host the event. Around 600 legal professionals and academics from all over the world are expected to attend the five-day congress. The conference is the world’s only interdisciplinary forum organised within the field of legal scholarship that brings together all areas of law from a comparative perspective, addressing not only academic but also broader societal discourses on the subject.
Extensive programme covering classic topics and current debates
The programme of each General Congress comprises around 30 to 35 topics relating to the key legal disciplines. Alongside ‘classic’ topics such as issues in contract law or the role of trusts – legal constructs from the Anglo-Saxon common law system – this year’s General Congress will focus on pressing issues of our time, such as digitalisation, the resilience of democracy and sustainability.
One of the main topics of the conference is the issue of legal education at universities in the face of a profound pluralisation of the law. Deans of law faculties from Asia, Europe, and North and South America will discuss this question on the panel ‘Steering Legal Education in a Pluralistic World’ (Monday, 28 September, 4.30 pm to 6 pm).
One of the highlights is the general panel on “Regional Courts, National Courts, Supranational Courts – Global Questions and Responsibilities,” which will conclude the conference. At this event, representatives from the highest German and European courts, along with a legal scholar who researches the rulings of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, will address the question of what role and responsibilities these courts assume in democracies that are under increasing pressure (Friday, 28 September, 12.00–13.30).

Congress returns to Germany after more than half a century
The General Congress of the Académie internationale de droit comparé / International Academy of Comparative Law, which takes place every four years, was first held in 1932 in The Hague, the Netherlands. It was last held at a German university 64 years ago. Back then, in 1962, the University of Hamburg was the host. This year’s organisers are Professor Dr Stefan Grundmann and his team from the Faculty of Law at HU.

(AIDC/IACL) was founded in The Hague in 1924 with the mission to enrich the understanding of law, support legal reforms and foster relations between nations through the law. Today, the Academy has more than seven hundred members who collaborate through national committees and international congresses. The resulting publications provide a comprehensive overview of global legal developments and make the Academy an indispensable point of reference for comparative law.
