European project egeniouss achieves up to 50-fold improvement in urban positioning accuracy

After more than three years of research, egeniouss has presented its final results at an event hosted by TU Braunschweig in Germany. The project’s visual localisation technology achieved up to 50 times greater positioning accuracy than conventional satellite-based systems in urban tests. The event showcased the project’s progress through live bicycle navigation and surveying demonstrations, as well as the advances made in drone operations
Experts from research and industry discussed the potential applications of these solutions across different sectors.

After more than three years of research, development and testing, the European project egeniouss has presented its final results at TU Braunschweig, Germany. The project has developed new solutions to improve positioning and navigation in environments where satellite signals are unreliable.

In urban areas, particularly streets lined with tall buildings, satellite signals can be blocked or reflected, making accurate positioning difficult. To address this challenge, egeniouss combines satellite navigation with images of the surrounding environment and data from multiple sensors, helping devices determine their location when satellite reception is limited.

One of the project’s key achievements is an improvement of up to 50 times in localisation accuracy compared with conventional satellite-based positioning, as measured in urban benchmark tests. The results demonstrate the potential of combining different technologies to deliver more reliable navigation without relying on a single source of positioning information.

The final event brought these developments into practice through demonstrations of bicycle navigation and surveying, showing how the technology could benefit both everyday mobility and professional activities.

The bicycle demonstration, led by beemo GmbH, took place around the Haus der Wissenschaft at TU Braunschweig using Naviki, a navigation app incorporating egeniouss technology. The urban route illustrated how the solution could improve navigation and route recording in streets where surrounding buildings interfere with satellite reception.

For the surveying demonstration, OPENGIS.ch used QField, a mobile app for collecting geographical data, in a practical exercise to locate points in the surrounding area. The activity highlighted how the technology could support precision fieldwork, including mapping and urban infrastructure maintenance, while reducing reliance on specialised external equipment.

The project’s third use case, developed by CATUAV, focused on drone operations, where accurate and continuous positioning is particularly important for reliable navigation.

The event also provided an opportunity to discuss the wider implications of these developments. During a panel discussion, experts from PTB, Cyclomedia and Leibniz University Hannover examined the challenges of putting the technology into practice and its potential applications in other sectors, including logistics and urban mobility.

Coordinated by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, egeniouss has brought together research organisations and technology companies from Austria, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. The project has a total budget of approximately €3.4 million, including around €3 million in European Union funding through the Horizon Europe programme.

    About egeniouss

egeniouss is a European research and innovation project developing more reliable positioning and navigation solutions for everyday and professional applications.

Its technology combines satellite navigation, computer vision and data from multiple sensors to improve positioning in challenging environments. The developments have been applied to three areas: bicycle navigation, surveying and drone operations.

Coordinated by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, the consortium comprises the Technical University of Braunschweig (Institute of Flight Guidance, Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry), GeoNumerics, SoftwareOne, CATUAV, the Centro Español de Logística (CEL), beemo GmbH and OPENGIS.ch.

egeniouss was funded under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, managed by the European Space Programme Agency (EUSPA), under grant number 101082128.
