Leadership in the Digital Age

Professor Urs E. Gattiker Pressestelle
ISNM - International School of New Media an der Universität zu Lübeck

Ruedy Baarfuss, member of the board of management center St. Gallen, Switzerland, is the keynote speaker of a new executive seminar at the ISNM discussing leadership skills for electronic business.

Luebeck, November 30, 2004 - The International School of New Media (ISNM) is launching a series of Executive Seminars entitled "Media, Mind, and Management". These seminars are designed for all people who want to use digital media for more effective work and communication, for IT experts who want to keep their IT systems 'up to date' as far as new technologies and safety is concerned. The seminars are also catered to serve managers who want to increase and exploit the innovation potentials of their companies. The first two seminars to be held in 2004 are about elite education and leadership in the digital age. The next executive event scheduled for January 2005 will be a two days seminar and workshop for entrepreneurs and founders of IT start-up companies.

    Digital Leadership

Henry Mintzberg, author of the book "Managers Not MBAs" claims that "MBA programs teach people to manage nothing". His view is supported by research and experiences of one of Europe's finest management schools, the Swiss Malik management center st. gallen. Its founder, Professor Fredmund Malik, is convinced that the American way of management is not applicable for Europe. His partner and member of the board of the management center, Ruedy Baarfuss, his supporting his view: Management is not business administration but strategic control of business. Therefore, management has to be trained and practiced as a profession - one of the most important profession of modern societies.
The management center has recently stated that strongly supported management guidelines, such as shareholder value, value based management and others, do not provide orientation but confusion to the manager.

Digital media triggered a revolutionary change in organizational culture and management methods. Well known management practices and leadership have been challenged by this transformation. The ISNM seminar "Leadership in a digital world: Leading change successfully" will present new models, best practices and background facts about successful management of e-business.
Urs E. Gattiker, professor for e-business at the ISNM, will talk about management skills and methods needed in the electronic business.
Ruedy Baarfuss will talk about leadership and management for transformational processes, and he will also discuss successful management cases and practices with the participants. This seminar will also be introduces and chaired by Joachim Hasebrook, professor for e-learning and work design at the ISNM.

    Quotes

"Management has a high risk job profile. Asking for more 'leadership' is not a response to the more complex and risky conditions we are in. The only answer is a professional management training", said Ruedy Baarfuss, member of the board of the Malik management center St. Gallen (Switzerland).
Gattiker (Professor at ISNM - Univ. of Luebeck) points out that "Mobile and information technology is creating an environment where leaders with limited authority are expected in creating a work environment offering activities that are collective, concurrent, collaborative, and compassionate. Everyone Sis primed for learning. This requires 'leaderful development'" Professor Gattiker continues: "Unfortunately, executives are expected to figure out, like sex, what it takes for creating the context in which others are willing and able to manage and lead. Usually with the same dire initial consequences."

About Executive Education at ISNM -- Success - All it Takes is an Application

ISNM's Executive Education offers people the opportunity for tooling up strategic skills and, as importantly, for leveraging their organization's competencies with integrity. The program addresses the globalization of work and culture and, as importantly, supports participants' efforts in better handling relationships where there is neither authority (e.g., customers) nor orders (e.g., NGOs). Based on attendees' background of experience, participants discuss how strategy and information help to build networks of alliances for manufacturing, distribution, technology and information management.
