GMD and PGI develop High Performance Fortran applications

    High Performance Fortran applications

GMD P the German National Research Center for Information Technology P and The Portland Group, Inc. (PGI*) today announced that they have entered into a strategic alliance. The announcement was made at the conference on High-Performance Computing and Networking HPCN '95 in Milan, Italy. The goal of this alliance is to accelerate the porting and tuning of key commercial applications to High Performance Fortran (HPF), the rapidly emerging de-facto standard for parallel programming on shared- and distributed-memory systems. Several major applications in crash simulation, aerodynamics, combustion and weather prediction will be ported to HPF.

Under the terms of the agreement, GMD's Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI) will utilize PGI's commercially available HPF compiler, pghpf*, along with SCAI's internally developed ADAPTOR parallelization tool to analyze, port and tune applications to HPF. The result will be a portable tuned version of each application which will run on any of the platforms supported by pghpf*, including the IBM SP-2, Intel Paragon, Meiko CS-2, SGI POWER CHALLENGE, Solaris SPARC, and CRAY T3D systems.

Ulrich Trottenberg, director of SCAI, explains: "Only parallel computers will be able to satisfy industry's increasing demand for large realistic simulations. There are immense European efforts for bringing parallel technology to industry and porting existing industrial software to parallel systems (project EUROPORT). Substantial breakthroughs in this area are expected in the near future. Each development supporting and simplifying this process constitutes an essential contribution. SCAI is very engaged in this field and highly welcomes PGI as an excellent partner."

"Fostering a base of highly tuned and widely used HPF applications is of critical importance in the continuing development and acceptance of HPF as a standard," adds Larry Meadows, chief technical officer, PGI, "and there is no organization more qualified to push that effort forward than GMD. Thomas Brandes and Falk Zimmermann are recognized experts in this area, as their recent ECCO Achievement Award indicates."

The quest of the GMD+s Institute SCAI is to foster and make significant contributions to a variety of scientific and technological disciplines by developing new algorithms and software in the field of parallel and scientific computing.

PGI is a leading independent vendor of software tools for parallel computing. PGI provides high performance, retargetable, production quality compilers and software development tools to the High Performance Computing (HPC) industry.

    Hilfe
