The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) develops communication and driver assistance systems - A Presentation at the "2.Saarbrücker IT-Dialog Automotive Industry "The 100% secure car made in Saarland" at the IAA.
The car of the future is to become safer. For instance, it ought to identify dangerous situations by itself and to alert the driver at the right time. Therefore the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) develops intelligent communication and driver assistance systems. At the International Motor Show (IAA PKW 2005) in Frankfurt Dr. Tilman Becker, project manager and senior researcher at DFKI, presents the current results of the latest research during a speech on "Intelligent Driver Assistance Systems".
For years DFKI has been working on intelligent driver assistance systems with partners from the automotive branch, to comply the customers' raising comfort and security requirements. DFKI customers from the automotive domain include companies like Daimler Chrysler, BMW, Porsche, VW, Audi, Bosch, Dekra. Research results in the field of multimodal, intelligent user interfaces expand into next generation vehicles via an intensive technology transfer. Following some examples:
Cars, that think ahead and communicate
Among other research topics DFKI works on "telematic horizon". That means the ability to share the sensor technology of cars driving ahead by using radio technologies (car-to-car-communication). Thereby for instance the car driver will be able to anticipate upcoming curves. Cars driving ahead warn in time of dangers like the ending of a traffic jam or iced roads. In the future, a similar technique will be applied to avoid rear-end collisions. By Car-to-Car Communication, a car driving ahead can warn against a truck sheering out of course unexpectedly. Imaginable could even be, to decelerate the following car automatically by an electronic steering system activated by radio to prevent an accident.
One of the aims of the research project "Smart Web", funded by the German Federal Ministry of education and research (BMBF), is to analyze how vehicles and drivers can prevent accidents through communication. A car ahead e.g. detects a risk of aquaplaning. An alert can be transferred spontaniously over an ad-hoc radio network via speech command to a following motorcyclist. Both vehicles are located over their GPS-coordinates, so it can be calculated if their distance is less than 100 meters. With the help of SmartWeb the motorcyclist receives the warning of aquaplaning even though his vehicle does not have a sensor of its own. Via headset the driver gets the message "Caution, aquaplaning 100 meters ahead!" per speech synthesis.
In-car mobile broadband communication
DFKI and Deutsche Telekom are working closely together within the "Multimedia Initiative" funded by the Ministry of Economy of Saarland. The first large UMTS test and evaluation center was established in Saarbrücken. Within the project "UMTS-DoIT" automobile appliances were developed, tested and used. Based on T-Mobile's infrastructure already several innovative UMTS-application concepts and prototypes were built, e.g. "Lindner Travel Guide", "Allergy Checker" and "Personal Multimedia Access". A public-transports bus was enlarged to a driving hotspot, so that the passenger could access the internet.
Dr. Tilman Becker will present "Intelligent Driver Assistance Systems" at the "2.Saarbrücker IT-Dialog Automotive Industry" at the IAA PKW 2005 (Congress Center Messe Frankfurt) on September, 16th at 12.00 a.m. More information is available at the Saarland community booth (Hall 4.1, Booth E15).
The "2.Saarbrücker IT-Dialog:The 100%-secure car" is also about secure hard- and software systems in vehicles, communication and driver assistance systems and further on about control and regulation of active carriage components.
