The internationally observed South Eastern Europe Tests (SEE) from 2nd to 13th October in Benkovac, Croatia, are to provide information on which metal detectors are best suited for the soils in South Eastern Europe. Besides the mines themselves, the explosive in the mines, which in addition to being exploited by terrorists, are themselves very dangerous.
Tests are carried out according to a scientific concept developed by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) under the umbrella of ITEP (International Test and Evaluation Program for Humanitarian Demining).
Metal detectors are used to detect mines. In Croatia the soils are special by having magnetic properties which can cause spurious signals. If mines with a very small metal content are present in such soils, finding them is a great challenge to the quality of the devices and thoroughness of the mine clearer It is important to test the overall system on site, i.e. the device, local conditions and serving personnel.
The results of BAM's experts should identify those metal detectors which are best suited for South Eastern Europe. In addition, these results are to be published in the international equipment catalogue produced by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining.
12 detector models from prominent international manufacturers within Germany, Italy, Austria, Australia, China and Russia, worked by 24 experienced mine clearers ffrom Croatia, will go over the test track under quasi-real field conditions. Russian and Chinese detectors will participate for the first time in these international comparison tests.
These activities are supported by the Federal Ministry for Defense and JRC Ispra of the European Commission, which provides some of the mine detectors that have already been tested in South East Asia and Africa.
