On Sunday, Countess Sonja Bernadotte ceremoniously opened the 57th Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau. The President of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings welcomed 17 Laureates and 563 highly talented young scientists of tomorrow to Lake Constance.

The President of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings welcomed 17 Laureates and 563 highly talented young scientists of tomorrow to Lake Constance. She urged all participants to make intensive use of the coming conference week for a dialogue.
This year's Nobel Laureate Meeting is devoted to the Laureates of Physiology and Medicine. Until Friday, the scientific elite of today and tomorrow will be discussing current issues concerning the medical sciences. To mark the Year of Humanitarian Arts, one special focal point will be the dialogue between the natural sciences and the humanitarian arts. The lectures and podium discussions from the 57th Nobel Laureate Meeting will be broadcast live at www.lindau-nobel.de.
The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting is a globally unique platform for the exchange of knowledge between Nobel Laureates and exceptionally talented young people. A visible indication of just how successful women are in the world of science is the fact that 283 female young scientists of tomorrow will be attending the 57th Nobel Laureate Meeting. The percentage of women nominated by the academic partners was also very high.
A multi-stage, international selection process in conjunction with a world-wide network of academic partners determines which of the several thousand applicants will be invited to Lake Constance. For example, the 31 Chinese representatives were selected from more than 20,000 of the country's fledgling scientists. Young scientists from 64 countries will be participating at the 2007 Lindau dialogue, lending the Nobel Laureate Meeting an international character as never before. During the course of the Meeting, cooperation agreements will be signed with scientific institutions in Hungary, Norway and Israel to assure that the best talents from these nations will in future continue to be able to attend the Nobel Laureate Meetings.
As part of the opening ceremony, Countess Sonja Bernadotte presented the Lennart-Bernadotte-Medaille to Michael Sohlman, Director of Stockholm's Nobel Foundation, in honour of his services to the Nobel Laureate Meetings. Sunday's opening ceremony closed with a podium discussion on the dialogue between the natural sciences and the humanitarian arts.
The annual Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Lindau are organised by the Council for the Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Lindau under the presidency of Countess Sonja Bernadotte (Isle of Mainau). The Foundation Lindau Nobelprizewinners Meetings at Lake Constance, whose Founders Assembly includes 169 Nobel Laureates, supports the Meetings. The natural-scientific Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine and in Physics have been held since 1951. Since 2004, the holders of the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, have also held biannual meetings on Lake Constance.
