Specialist seminar "Efficient mixing of modern concrete", Berlin, 30 October 2007 - Efficient mixing guarantees high quality

Dr. Ulrike Rockland Pressestelle
Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)

The specialist seminar "Efficient mixing of modern concrete", Berlin, 30 October 2007 will deal with the fundamentals of mixing technology. Organizers are the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), BetonMarketing Ost (Concrete Marketing East) and the Materials Research and Testing Office, Leipzig. Following the lectures at the seminar, BAM will offer a practical demonstration of concrete mixing. The seminar will primarily address concrete technologists, managers and laboratory heads of precast concrete and ready-mix concrete plant as well as manufacturers of concrete products and additives.

As the technical specifications for concrete become more stringent; the quality of mixes also improves. However, the available mixing methods are more than a hundred years old, often originating from the 19th century. These mixing systems have been completely adequate for concrete processing over many decades but they reached their limit of application when fines-rich high-performance concrete and concentrated liquid additives were introduced.

The specialist seminar will discuss how constant quality can be achieved using common mixing systems (pan mixers such as ring trough and planetary mixers as well as trough mixers, such as single and double-shaft mixers). A mixing system will be presented which has so far mainly been used in Germany for fine and finest grain concrete. Universities and material testing institutes, such as BAM, research into and work with this system, which also enables the mixing process to be recorded and the mixing result determined. This is how high-performance concrete with modern properties is produced which is used today in a variety of applications.

Materials research and testing institutes and universities will present results from their current work. The participants will attain a view into the fundamentals of mixing technology. How different types of concrete require different mixing techniques will be clarified. The specialist seminar will encourage analysis of the common manufacturing techniques in order to optimize the production using new, successful future methods.

The seminar fee is 70.00 euro (including VAT) which includes refreshments and delegate folders with abstracts of the presentations. A number of free places are available for students and employees of public institutions without their own revenue.
