Hamburg, 14 March, 2008 - The first global, purely virtual climate conference, "Klima 2008 / Climate 2008", will take place from the 3 to 7 November. It will be organised by the Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg, Germany, under the leadership of Professor Walter Leal from the research and transfer centre "Applications of Life Sciences". The centre is part of the Faculty of Life Sciences. Other partners of the conference are the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Moreover, UNESCO declared the event to be a project of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005 to 2014). The Hamburg public relations agency RAIKE Kommunikation is also a partner of the conference and responsible for its sponsoring as well as the marketing.
Conference with a new concept:
"Klima 2008 / Climate 2008" will take place exclusively on the Internet. Conference languages are German and English. On the basis of submitted scientific paper abstracts participants of the conference will debate in forums on various aspects of the climate change. In addition, they will have the opportunity to present climate projects to a worldwide audience. The public may also be interested in getting in contact with the participating scientists. "We offer the opportunity to discuss with all target groups at a high level without polluting the environment," says Leal. The climate conference will address a wide audience: scientists, politicians, businessmen, associations and NGOs, as well as schools and everyone else who is interested in the conference. Objectives of the conference are to develop synergies, to share scientific knowledge and to promote cooperation among scientific institutions. The organisers expect at least a million conference participants. Participation in "2008 Klima / Climate 2008" is free.
Ideas and abstracts for technical papers can be submitted by e-mail to
ftz-als@ls.haw-hamburg.de. A high-level scientific advisory board will sift them and choose the ones which will be put on the website. Members of the advisory board are, for example, scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the Technical University of Delft and the EPA. Potential participants can register at www.klima2008.net.
The research and transfer centre "Applications of Life Sciences": The research and transfer centre "Applications of Life Sciences" of the University of Applied Sciences Hamburg, Germany was founded in August 2007. It is managed by Professor Walter Leal. The centre provides local, national and international project approaches - particularly in the field of life sciences (including biotechnology, as well as medical, pharmaceutical and environmental protection technology) and in terms of issues such as energy, climate change and sustainability.
