Two brand-new units for casting processes have been developed by Casting Technology International within the SMErobot project: the intelligent close-cutting burner and the lightweight cutter and grinder. These innovative tools are designed for use in SME casting foundries (SME = small and medium-sized enterprise).
"Exactaburn" - intelligent close-cutting burner.
The unit utilizes a specially designed extended cutting nozzle for better oxygen cutting stream control , combined with a reduced external diameter to provide improved access when cutting castings. The reduction in diameter allows a closer than normal cutting plane to be achieved. The overall result is to provide closer and more accurate cutting of castings, with minimal need for after-processing. In addition, the unit incorporates an optical sensor, specially developed for the project, which not only affords protection from damage but also makes it possible to view the ignition point of the oxy/ fuel cutting process down the internal cutting oxygen bore of the nozzle. The optical sensor is focused on this point in order to continuously monitor the ignition temperature of the cutting process, which can exceed 1500°C. This ability provides an intelligent solution for consistent initiation of the oxy/fuel cutting process and monitoring to give feedback information for correcting the forward velocity of the robot, if required.
"Cutlight" - Lightweight cutter and grinder.
This is a compact grinding unit with a low mass-to-power ratio and reduced vibration. Two exchangeable components offer a hybrid solution for the adaptation of hand tools for robotic applications. These components optimize the tool centre point and thus reduce the wrist torque requirements. The components modify the entry of the compressed air to reduce the overall size of the unit and convert the unit to external activation. All of this, in combination with the unit's standard soft-start and "fail safe stall" features, makes for a cost-effective solution to robotic grinding.
