SMErobot presents a new six Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) force/torque sensor technology developed for robotic applications. The first prototype has been designed for lead-through programming, but the sensor concept can also be implemented for process force control. The main goal in developing the sensor was to make robot force control less expensive, something of particular importance for SMEs (SME= small and medium-sized enterprise), which find it difficult to invest in the 6 DOF force/torque sensors available today. The prototype that will be displayed consists of a silicon MEMS structure (MEMS = Micro Electro-Mechanical Sensor) attached to a steel transducer manufactured by laser cutting. The MEMS structure includes beam elements with integrated piezoresistors and the transducer consists of a planar spring system that is easy to adapt to the force and torque ranges needed for the targeted applications. The sensor has been developed by Fraunhofer ISIT in collaboration with ABB Robotics.
