A new Master's Degree in Photonics at the University of Applied Sciences - München
Structures are becoming smaller and smaller, the volume of data is increasing
constantly, storage density doubling and doubling again in ever shorter intervals - all of this made possible by the photon, the smallest particle of light. In Germany alone, over 90% of data transport is through fiber-optic cable by light.
The technologies which make use of photons are classified under the name of
"photonics". These include such fields as information and medical technologies, the science of metrology, the many technologies using lasers - none of them would be what they are today without photonics. The entire range of optical technologies embraces photonics, one of the key future technologies.
A wide range of highly attractive endeavors stands open to students of photonics: In Bavaria alone, there are 350 manufacturers active in the field of photonics. Nearly forty research facilities are involved in related disciplines. New careers in both industry and research are open to young engineers interested in this field.
Career choices available in this high-tech field range from research and development to production and marketing and on to executive positions in leading companies. The interdisciplinary orientation of this course of study qualifies graduates for management roles involving information transfer and synthesis. One-third of the recipients of similar Master's Degrees have gone on from Master's Degrees to doctoral degrees at advanced institutions.
The Master's Degree Course of Study in Photonics is for both full-time and part-time students. Professionals seeking to expand their competence while working are very welcome.
