FIZ Karlsruhe and the scientific publishing house Springer continue their collaboration / ZMATH enhanced according to latest technical standards/ quick and efficient access to relevant mathematical information
Karlsruhe/Frankfurt, December 2008 - Zentralblatt MATH, the oldest and most comprehensive information service in mathematics, is well prepared for the digital age. A few days ago, FIZ Karlsruhe, the scientific publishing house Springer and the two other editors, Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften and the European Mathematical Society, signed the second amendment of the publisher agreement for Zentralblatt MATH. This ensures the further development of this well-established publication, thus enabling it to meet the challenges of the digital age.
Zentralblatt für Mathematik was founded by Springer in 1931 as a reference journal aiming at maximum completeness and high topicality. While in 1932 there were only 4,432 papers covered, in the meantime more than 100,000 papers per year are added. Due to this enormous increase of referenced publications the printed version soon reached its limits. Therefore, in 1985, FIZ Karlsruhe launched an online version, the ZMATH database, which is available worldwide and by now contains more than 2.7 million records.
"Right from the start our goal was to provide topical and comprehensive information reflecting the scientific progress in mathematics and its fields of application", says Prof. Dr. Bernd Wegner, Editor in Chief of Zentralblatt MATH. "Today, Zentralblatt MATH is the oldest and most comprehensive bibliographical information service in mathematics, with its electronic version constantly gaining in importance".
The new publisher agreement now takes account of the fact that the online database (www.zentralblatt-math.org) is given higher priority than the printed version and ensures that the information service will be enhanced according to the latest technical standards. Current and future activities will focus on developing more sophisticated search functions and intelligent navigation and ranking methods.
