On 29 October at 2.30 pm, PhD Candidate Jean-Charles Languilaire literally nails his doctoral thesis to the wall of Jönköping International Business School. This is an old ceremony that means that the thesis is official and no changes may be made. The thesis will be the 60th doctoral thesis of JIBS since the doctoral programme started in 1995.
The thesis title is "Experiencing work/non-work - Theorising individuals' process of integrating and segmenting work, family, social and private". It describes how work and non-work needs to be both integrated and segmented for us to be content with our lives.
The thesis is based on interviews with six middle managers in France who talk about their experiences of work and non-work. It deals with the importance of the relationship between work and non-work, and how to act in the domains of work, family life, social life and private life. How do we handle the various parts of our lives?
It turns out that both segmentation and integration of the various parts of life is important. You have to understand which domain you're in, and then it will also be easier dealing with the demands of each domain. The dissertation shows that individuals value segmentation higher in the short term, but integration is valued higher in the longer term. The combination of segmentation and integration are essential to achieve harmony between work, family life, social life and private life.

Jean-Charles Languilaire came to Sweden in 2001 from the Burgundy School of Business in France and ended up at CTF (Service Research Centre) at Karlstad University as an exchange student, where he graduated in business administration. In 2002, he came to Jönköping as a PhD Candidate of Jönköping International Business School.
Jean-Charles Languilaire will defend his doctoral thesis in Business Administration on Friday, 27 November 2009 at 10 a.m. in B1014 at JIBS.
