Bremen in the Center of International Environmental Sciences
Conference builds on Impulses from Science and Politics for the World Summit 2002

The 11th General Assembly (GA) of the Scientific Committee On Problems of the Environment - SCOPE will be meeting in Bremen between September 24 and 28, 2001. SCOPE is an interdisciplinary organization where the experts in natural and social sciences deal with global enviornmental questions.

SCOPE collects and evaluates scientific knowledge and serves as an interface between scientific and political decision makers. The 11th General Assembly of SCOPE takes place following the invitation of the German Research Foundation (DFG). On behalf of the DFG, the national committee for SCOPE in Germany and the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) at the University of Bremen carry the responsibility for the organization and holding of this event. In addition to the regular dealing with rules of procedures, the General Assembly gives an opportunity to hold scientific symposia on current to-pics in the field of environmental sciences.

Symposium 1 "the 1990's: Unforeseen Challenges and Lessons for Environmental Sciences" deals with the global environmental situation and new challenges in environmental science of the past decade, which is marked by the political and socio-economic revolution. The symposium will discuss the role science and research played in environmental management and environmental shaping during the last decade. Future perspectives will be shown based on case examples.

Symposium 2 "Environmental Issues in the Management of the Coastal Zone" concerns itself with environmental questions regarding integrated coastal zone management. Focus will be placed on questions on the topic of utilization potential of coastal regions and its endangerment via anthropogenic intervention in the coastal zone, as well as in the back land. The director of the Center for Tropical Marine Ecology and the organizer of this conference emphasizes,"Herein, our special interest is directed towards the interaction between different ecological systems on one side and natural and so-cial sciences on the other".

Among the participants are delegates from national and international member organizations, representatives of scientific organizations associated with SCOPE and invited guests from partner organizations, both governmental and nongovernmental. Guest speakers are renowned scientists in va-rious fields. Due to the contributions' high scientific value, theme groups of both symposia will be of considerable significance especially for the preparation of the Rio plus 10 Conference in Johannes-burg, South Africa in 2002 - significance not only in view of the evaluation preformance of the past ten years, but also of the planning and enforcement of future programs for the sustainable protection of the environment.

The conference will be opened by Professor Mellilo, President of SCOPE. Participants will then be greeted by Professor Winnacker, President of the DFG, followed by Willi Lemke, the Senator for education and science of Bremen. The opening ceremony of the conference will be held on Monday, September 24 at 9 o'clock in the new main lecture hall at the Universitätsallee GW1 across from the Universum Science Center.

We invite members of the press to the opening ceremony. Thereafter, we extend an invitation to a press conference on Monday, September 24 at 10:30 o'clock in Room 1010 on the upper floor of the new main lecture hall at the Universitätsallee GW1. The partners for discussion are the conference convenor, members of DFG, as well as leading members of the General Assembly.
