7. World Congress for Nuclear Medicine and Biology - Second invitation

Heike Jordan Pressestelle
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nuklearmedizin e.V.

    August 30 - September 4, 1998, ICC Berlin

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
from August 30 - September 4, 1998, approximately 3000 Nuclear medicine specialists and scientists as well as colleagues from related fields of medicine will meet in Berlin (ICC) on the occasion of the 7th World Congress of Nuclear Medicine and Biology. The World Federation of Nuclear Medicine and Biology (WFNM&B) organized its Congress - jointly with the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) - for the first time in Germany.
You are cordially invited to participate in the whole scientific program without costs. Additionally to the program, there are several symposia organized together with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The highlights of the scientific program have already been announced in the first invitation. They are summarized on the occasion of two press briefings on Monday, August 31, 1998 (Hall Columbus):

    August 31, 1998, 11.00 a.m. - 12.30 a.m. (in German):
    - Nuclear Medicine in diagnosis and therapy (Prof. Harald Schicha, Cologne)
    - Current developments of radionuclide therapy (Prof. Manfred Fischer, Kassel)
    - Nuclear Medicine in the diagnosis of bone diseases and injuries in childhood and youth (Prof. Klaus Hahn, Munich)
    - Congress highlights in diagnostic oncology (Prof. Roland Bares, Tübingen)
    - Diagnosis and therapy planing in coronary artery disease (Prof. Udalrich Büll, Aachen)

    August 31, 1998, 12.30 a.m. - 14.00 a.m. (in English):
    - Cost benefit structures in Nuclear Medicine (Prof. Henry Wagner, Baltimore, USA)
    - Bone pain palliation in bone tumors, radioimmunotherapy in colon Cancer and other malignant diseases (Prof. Wolfgang Becker, Göttingen)
    - Nuclear Medicine procedures in renal diseases of childhood and youth (Prof. Jim Conway, Chicago, USA)
    - Receptor-ligand-binding (Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease) (Prof. Peter Josef Ell, London, GB)
    - Positron emission tomography (PET) in the diagnosis of cancer and myocardial diseases (Prof. Markus Schwaiger, Munich)

Two other topics will be covered in two press briefings on Tuesday, September 1, 1998:

    September 1, 1998, 11.00 a.m. - 12.30 a.m.:
The first press briefing is related to the IAEA/WHO symposium on "Global perspectives of Nuclear Medicine" (September 1, 2.00 - 5.00 p.m.) as well as the Cochrane symposium (August 31, 9.00 - 10.30 a.m.) and will present the following topics:
    - Dr. Steffen Groth, Director of the Division of Human Health of the IAEA, will inform you about concepts and initiatives of the IAEA on the use of Nuclear Medicine to improve worldwide health services.
    - He will also summarize the activities of the Cochrane Collaboration which was founded in 1991 and screens international publications to establish a bibliography for internet. This bibliography will present the actual state of the art of worldwide research to make it also available for less developed countries.
    - Dr. Alicia Aznarez from Uruguay will present results of the IAEA project which is aimed at the diagnosis of hypothyrodism in newborns.

    September 1, 1998, 12.30 a.m. - 14.00 a.m.:
Together with the German Cancer Society we want to inform you about the state of the art of diagnosis and therapy of breast cancer:
    - Prof. Kurt Werner Possinger, member of the German Cancer Society, Berlin, will talk about the demands of oncology on the Nuclear Medicine diagnosis and the state of the art of high dose chemotherapy.
    - Prof. Iraj Khalkhali, University of California, USA, will present results of scintimammography which helps - together with mammography - to reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies of the breast.
    - In high dose chemo therapy with its significant side effects, a response should be documented as early as possible. Positron emission tomography might be helpful which is documented by the results presented by Dr. Norbert Avril from Munich.

We also want to cordially invite you to attend the opening ceremony on Sunday, August 30, 1998, 5.00 p.m., Hall 1 of the ICC. The honorary guest speaker will be Ignatz Bubis, the President of the Central Council of the Jews in Germany.

In case you have not yet registered, we would appreciate if you could send a short message for your accreditation (an online form may be found under http://www.nuklearmedizin.de). Further information will be obtained from the press officer of the WFNM&B Congress:
