In modern pharmaceutical research, the mapping of disease-related genetic changes is of fundamental importance for the development of new and more efficient drugs and therapies. This leads to a growing demand for methods and technologies for fast and precise analysis of proteins as well as other molecular and cellular target structures ? a trend palpably illustrated by the rising number of biotechnological catchwords like Genomics, Transcriptomics, Proteomics and Metabolomics.
One of the main reasons for the failure of many drugs to be improved or tested in practice is the lack of methods allowing to quickly study pharmacokinetics and toxicity of large numbers of substances in parallel. Automated biohybrid systems, i.e. cell and tissue-based highly parallel microstructures that can be controlled bioelectronically, have a high potential to fundamentally reduce costs in later phases of drug development.
The Biohybrid Systems Department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) develops and provides such biohybrid single-cell biochips and microcapillary arrays. Using impedance spectroscopy, these systems allow for automated screening of toxicologically relevant substances in microscopic cell and tissue models.
Further applications of IBMT's biohybrid chip systems include pharmaceutical screening, quality control (e.g. in food processing) or environmental issues like the detection of toxins (e.g. pesticides, insecticides).
