German-Turkish dialogue: the effects of media

    Television series such as Turkish for beginners, a film by director Fatih Akın, Facebook, Twitter – how are different media utilized in the German-Turkish context, and what are their effects? These questions will be discussed by academics at a conference entitled ‘Media.Bridge.Cultures’ on December 10 and 11 at Kadir Has University in Istanbul. One of the organizers of this seminar is Dr. Özen Odağ of Jacobs University in Bremen.

    “Media connects people and can create a sense of belonging beyond borders. Using it can help to establish identity and contribute towards integration,” says Dr. Özen Odağ. The media psychologist is the co-initiator and organizer of the conference together with Çiğdem Bozdağ of Kadir Has University. The conference is sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF); as a pioneering instrument by which to strengthen academic dialog between the two countries it won a contest of ideas held by the BMBF as part of the German-Turkic Year of Science.

    One of the themes of the conference will be how the media is used by Turkish migrants living in Germany. Television, for instance, is very important to people who still identify strongly with their home culture. It is in this context that German-Turkish movies, movie-makers, and television series will be discussed. Another lecture examines the role of social media in the integration of young adults from a Turkish background. Dr. Özen Odağ herself will be presenting a review of the importance of the Internet in the radicalization of young people. “There’s virtually no empirical evidence,” she says.

    The seminar will be streamed live on the Internet. That includes talks by two renowned speakers: Andreas Hepp, Professor of Communication and Media Science at the University of Bremen, and Prof. Dr. Christine Ogan of Indiana University.
