As one of nine AACSB-accredited business schools in Germany, HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management hosts one of the now 4 German chapters of Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS), the world’s first truly global honor society in business. Membership is increasingly recognized as a mark of academic excellence, and every year the chapter invites the top 20 per cent of graduates from HHL’s programs and all who completed HHL’s doctoral program to become members.

The 2015 BGS scholarship is jointly funded by the Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter at HHL and the Association of Friends of HHL ("Gesellschaft der Freunde der HHL – GdF").

This year sees two equally qualified scholars: Eric Weber from the Stiftungsfonds Deutsche Bank Chair of Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship, and Benjamin Hammer from the Chair of Financial Management at HHL, each of them receiving an amount of 500 EUR.

In his recommendation, Dean Professor Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, HHL faculty member and the nominee’s PhD advisor, mentions Eric Weber’s outstanding academic achievements and extracurricular work. His research on advisory boards in startups was presented at several international and national conferences. Moreover, he co-authored and published a book chapter on resource efficiency as innovation driver.

Before his PhD, Eric Weber successfully graduated from both his bachelor and master studies among the best students in his year. Among other activities in student associations, he served as head of the students union during his bachelor.

Inside HHL, he worked in the honor code committee and supported student initiatives like Accelerate@HHL and the HHL Energy Club in the organization of their conferences.

In his recommendation for Benjamin Hammer, Professor Dr. Bernhard Schwetzler, HHL faculty member and the nominee’s PhD advisor, mentions the outstanding grades in the PhD program and the exceptional quality of Mr. Hammer’s research.

In 2015, Mr. Hammer co-authored the paper “Exit through Exitus in Private Equity Buyouts”, which won the “Larry Lang Corporate Finance Best Paper Award” at the annual meeting of the European Financial Management Association. He contributed to the academic discussion at several renowned conferences such the annual meeting of the European Finance Association, and won a rare PhD travel grant from the most prestigious American Finance Association.

Beyond his academic experience, Benjamin Hammer contributes to HHL’s alumni network as the co-head of the Leipzig Alumni Chapter, and serves as the representative of HHL’s research associates in the HHL senate.
