Start-Up Initiative for Bio-Economy

MBA Volker Stößel Media Relations
HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management

Project GISBERT will connect research competencies with regional start-up support in Central Germany within the leading-edge BioEconomy cluster.

With its project GISBERT, HHL will launch an innovative program to connect research competencies with regional start-up support in Central Germany within the leading-edge BioEconomy cluster. Moreover, the project aims to accelerate the creation of start-up and spin-off businesses in the innovation fields of the bio-economy, a young research discipline merging economic and ecological aspects. Project GISBERT is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and runs until August 31, 2017. The first founders' workshops and matchmaking events will take place in only a few months' time.

Central German project partners emphasize the potential of bio-based business models

Most of the partners are located in Central Germany, working on mechanisms to bring together the research of the 44 joint and 144 individual projects with entrepreneurial potential for the region within the framework of the leading-edge BioEconomy cluster. In doing so, they approach founders, who combine knowledge and skills in economics with an affinity for bio-based business models, in a targeted manner. This is to intensify the technology transfer in the cluster while bringing new, young entrepreneurs into contact with potential investors as well.

    Events and a new award

Matchmaking events such as "Economy Meets Science", "Design Meets BioEconomy" as well as pitching events or a special innovation boot camp represent specific formats for this purpose. The first events are scheduled to take place as early as February 2016. One of the highlights will be the interconnection of the bio-economy focus into the annual HHL Investors Day on June 15, 2016 where teams of founders with innovative ideas meet potential investors. Additionally, the Best Bio-Based Business Award will be awarded for the best pitches from the fields of bio-economy, bio-technology, life sciences and medical engineering. For further information on this project, please do not hesitate to contact project coordinator at HHL, Ms. Busch (julia.busch(at)hhl.de).

HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management as a hotbed for entrepreneurs

With over 150 start-ups established by HHL alumni over the past 17 years, Germany's top address for young managers has also developed into an incubator for company creation. The founders' entrepreneurial commitment has created more than 2,500 jobs already, over 1,100 of which are located in the Leipzig region alone. In 2013 and 2014, HHL reached one of three first places for the best entrepreneurial universities in Germany in the Start-Up Radar ranking published by Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Founders' Association of German Science) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BWMi). According to the Financial Times, HHL ranks first in Germany and fifth globally for its entrepreneurship focus within the M.Sc. and EMBA programs. www.hhl.de/EntrepreneurialGraduateSchool
