Meeting the Demand for Specialists

Rudolf-Werner Dreier Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau

With the “Master 2016” program, the University of Freiburg receives five new degree programs and expands three others

The University of Freiburg has applied successfully for the “Master 2016” expansion program offered by Baden-Württemberg’s Ministry of Science, Research, and the Arts (MWK). The university will receive five new master’s degree programs: Neuroscience, Sustainable Systems Engineering, Religious Studies, Biology – Emphasis in Trinational Biotechnology, and Applied Physics. In addition, the MWK approved funding to increase admissions in the three existing master’s programs Renewable Energy Engineering and Management, Public and Non-Profit Management, and Geography of Global Change. This will enable the university to welcome a total of 200 new students, half of them in the 2016/17 winter semester and the other half in the 2017/18 winter semester. The MWK has agreed to provide funding for nine additional professorships to make this possible.

The two English-taught master’s programs Neuroscience and Applied Physics and the German-taught programs Religious Studies and Biology – Emphasis in Trinational Biotechnology will involve cooperation with partners from the European Campus. This is a further step in the development of the trinational university alliance. The English-taught program Sustainable Systems Engineering will be the first to be offered by the new Department of Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) at the Faculty of Engineering. INATECH is also participating in the expanded Master in Renewable Energy Engineering and Management program. Moreover, the expanded degree program Public and Non-Profit Management will reinforce the university’s strategic alliance with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft at the Sustainability Center Freiburg. The likewise expanded Master in Geography of Global Change degree program will give a further boost to the university’s cooperation with the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute, which was intensified in December 2015 with the establishment of the Chair of Developmental Theories and Developmental Policy at the university’s Department of Political Science.

The hiring campaign “Master 2016” is part of the MWK’s ongoing efforts to increase admissions in master’s programs in Baden-Württemberg. The goal is to guarantee a qualified professional education for the increasing number of graduates from bachelor’s degree programs and to meet the great demand for specialists and managers in science and industry.
