Morgenstadt-Werkstatt

    Developing urban innovations together

With the “Morgenstadt-Werkstatt”, Fraunhofer IAO and Landesmesse Stuttgart are initiating a so-called “makerspace” that brings citizens, students, start-ups, established companies, and municipal governments into dialog about the city of the future. The event provides a variety of formats and spaces for exploring interdisciplinary issues relating to mobility, energy, and adaptive construction in the context of digitalization.

Megacities around the world, as well as cities in Germany and Europe, are facing challenges so complex and far-reaching that attempting only to optimize the current state of mobility, energy and water infrastructure would not address the actual demands. We need a new blueprint and strong innovation partnerships to make the cities of the future sustainable and worth living in.

Through a completely new event format, which is sponsored by the Ministry of Finance and Economics Baden-Württemberg, Fraunhofer IAO wants to create a network consisting of all stakeholders that address the topic of “city of the future” either directly or indirectly. Architect, city planner, or ordinary citizen – everyone can and should bring their own ideas and projects to the workshop and discuss current challenges. During the workshop sessions, all participants join forces in creating new solutions, and can find business partners and new inspiration. The goal is to create integrated solutions that are tailored to the urban system as a whole. To this end, the Morgenstadt-Werkstatt provides a format that provides all players with equal opportunity to contribute. Events such as panel ¬discussions, creative workshops, and “speed dating” are designed to channel combined know-how and creativity in order to reach for the future.
Digital solutions for mobility, energy, sustainable building, and lifestyle

Morgenstadt-Werkstatt participants can choose which sessions to attend based on their individual interests. A hackathon runs parallel to the program items on both days, and updates and results will be regularly presented for everyone to follow. Everyone involved from the fields of business, research, planning, architecture, and municipal government as well as students will have the opportunity to submit their questions, issues and event formats in advance. The focus will be on the topics of mobility, energy, sustainable building, and lifestyle – guided in each case by the overarching theme of digitalization.
    Active cooperation for maximum value

As the event is nonprofit, it relies on the energy and commitment of its participants. Interested businesses can be involved in the Morgenstadt-Werkstatt as a partner, giving them the opportunity to contribute their solutions and topics for the future and actively shape the program by hosting their own event at the Morgenstadt-Werkstatt. There are also additional benefits for the representatives of municipal governments: they can meet with many other stakeholders and future solutions providers in order to address the challenges facing their cities and work directly on potential concepts. Students and freelancers have a chance to expand their network and connect with the employers of tomorrow – or even to pick up an exciting topic for their thesis.
