Fraunhofer IZFP offers its customers and research partners the entire range of nondestructive testing technologies, whether it involves basic or applied research. The institute's researchers, engineers and technicians develop solutions to address modern testing applications including feasibility studies, consulting, training and inspection services and creating prototype systems. From June 13 to 17, 2016, Fraunhofer IZFP will discuss the subject of NDT in maritime industries – in the tense environment of economy - at the World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing (WCNDT) in Munich.
The shipbuilding industry has strongly suffered from the economic crisis since 2008. Nevertheless, higher economic efficiency, higher safety and optimized environmental compatibility are – among others – the challenges to be addressed. NDT with its manifold techniques can positively contribute and should accordingly be involved.
Addressing ultrasonic inspection of large ship propulsion components – hub casings and propellers – we illuminate the tense environment in which NDT has to act in the ship building industry. Progress in defect detection by optimized, mechanized inspection techniques leads to improved reliability in the inspection of these cast components, not at least by a reduction of the human factor, and to a reduction of the amount of failures with all beneficial consequences in view of ecological aspects. On the other hand, NDT has to face the pressure concerning time and costs which is imposed by the owners and the manufacturers. Their desired ‘minimal-NDT’ strongly contrasts the achievable inspection quality and can have a strong impact on the inspector’s performance and on the inspection results. Between these interests we additionally have to obey the classification societies which also focus on safety aspects, but at the time have to comply with their customers, i.e. owner and manufacturer.
In this contribution we try to illuminate these various aspects on the basis of our experiences gathered in numerous onsite inspections in Europe and South-East Asia. Although maritime industries build the background, we are sure that the addressed aspects - which for the NDT inspector can be summarized in the issue ‘quality versus demand’ – can be similarly found in (many?) other industries.
