The Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing IZFP carries out research and development activities in the field of nondestructive testing processes along the entire materials value chain. For customers in the automobile, aerospace, rail, energy, construction and agriculture industries, the institute offers a wide range of NDT expertise and technologies. From June 13 to 17, 2016, our researchers will present the subject of nondestructive testing of green sanitary ceramics by microwaves and active thermographic technique at the 19th World Conference on Non-Destructive Testing (WCNDT) in Munich.
Ceramics industry is among the industrial sectors with high consumption of resources.
The market is demanding ambitious products that often are not easy to produce. Up to now, it was sometimes not possible to detect all moisture accumulations and hidden defects in green ceramics from preceding production steps. The product is then unnecessarily running through the energy-consuming firing process until the defects become visible. Then, costly disposal of waste is necessary, as only a small part of the material can be fed back into production. In the framework of a joint research project of a ceramics manufacturer with other partners it was the goal to achieve significant savings of resources by early employing nondestructive testing techniques.
In certain areas of pre-dried ceramic green bodies (WCs) moisture accumulations may occur, that are prone to crack formation in the further process. Such moisture accumulations were detected using a microwave moisture sensor based on time-domain reflectometry. The task was to miniaturize this sensor in a way that moisture accumulations would be detectable with sufficient sensitivity at unfavorably located positions of the component. Only components with too much moisture are additionally dried. If there are no indications for moisture accumulations, the green body is moved by a robot to the crack testing station. Crack testing comprises an automated visual inspection and thermographic testing for hidden cracks. Thermal excitation had to be performed in a way that generates heat flow components perpendicular to the crack. This could be achieved by line heating and by using rotational movement of the test object. Basic investigations including simulation helped to optimize the testing parameters. Hot air flow heating was finally used as a simple excitation technique. First tests in production environment were successful. The individual systems from the project partners are planned to be combined to a model facility in production.
