International, interdisciplinary, and unique – these words best describe the English-taught master’s programme History & Economics, which will kick off in Winter Semester 2016/17. Application deadline: 15 July 2016
In Germany and even more so in other countries, the field of economic history has experienced an unexpected revival in recent years. This subfield of economics has received a great deal of public attention due to the global economic crisis, and interest is increasing among young people, in particular. For this reason, the University of Bayreuth has seized this opportunity to launch the new master’s programme History & Economics, taught entirely in English.
“The economy is constantly changing. The global financial crisis has taught us that a long-term perspective can help us to better understand changes in the economy,” explained Prof. Dr. Jan-Otmar Hesse, Chair of Economic & Social History at the University of Bayreuth. Prof. Dr. Erik Hornung, Chair of Economics VII (Quantitative Economic History), added, “More and more experts will be needed to analyse the complex interrelationships and develop integrative approaches.” The Chair of Economic & Social History was established in 2015 in the Faculty of Cultural Studies, and the Chair of Quantitative Economic History was established in 2016 in the Faculty of Law, Business & Economics at the University of Bayreuth.
“History & Economics offers young people interdisciplinary training in the areas of history and economics that is unique in Germany. With this entirely English-taught programme, we hope to attract international students to the University of Bayreuth as well,” the programme advisors said. The combination of history and economics gives graduates a career-qualifying degree that prepares them for a career in the private sector or for a doctorate in the increasingly important research field of economic history.

• Requirements: a bachelor’s degree in economics or history, or an equivalent degree awarded in Germany or abroad
• Language of instruction: English
• Programme advisors: Prof. Dr. Jan-Otmar Hesse and Prof. Dr. Erik Hornung
• Aptitude assessment process – Application deadline: 15 July 2016
• Start of the programme: Winter Semester 2016/17
• Standard period of study: 4 semesters of full-time study (part-time study options are available)
• Degree awarded: Master of Arts (M.A.)

In Winter Semester 2016/17, five new master’s programmes and a supplemental programme (with an Elite certificate) will get under way. What is special is that all these programmes have an international focus and are taught in English. Applications are currently being accepted.
