Mainz University is committed to providing excellent working conditions for researchers
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has received the HR Excellence in Research seal of approval of the European Commission for its Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R). By implementing the strategy, Mainz University will integrate the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers into its HR policy. To obtain the seal of approval, JGU reviewed the on-site working conditions for academics and designed measures to support the research profession and improve career prospects for researchers. In the global competition to attract the best researchers, the HR Excellence in Research award highlights institutions that aim to respect ethical and professional standards, employ fair and transparent recruitment processes, and provide a favorable working environment with opportunities for further professional advancement.
"The HR Excellence in Research seal of approval is an incentive for us to continue to optimize and upgrade our existing in-house strategies for creating attractive employment and working conditions in a modern research environment – for researchers from both Germany and abroad," stated Professor Georg Krausch, President of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. "It improves our chances of attracting highly qualified researchers, which in turn will not only enhance the national and international reputation and visibility of Mainz University, but also increase our capacity for producing excellent scientific work."
The measures introduced at JGU aim to strengthen guidelines for academic integrity, extend support for researchers applying for third-party funding, optimize the process for recruiting researchers, and facilitate knowledge transfer from social sciences and humanities into practice. Implementing the JGU guidelines for good work practice and introducing a concept for corporate health management will help to improve working conditions across all disciplines. As host to an increasing number of young and highly mobile researchers, JGU will also expand its program to help reconcile work and family life. In addition to providing advice and support in the areas of gender equality, child care, and dependents in need of care, JGU will establish a Dual Career Service to assist partners of newly appointed professors in continuing their careers in the Mainz region. The JGU strategy also focuses on the promotion and mentoring of young research talents. Existing services at Mainz University will be more clearly structured, and career advice for postdoctoral researchers will receive increased attention.
In four years' time, the European Commission will review the implementation of JGU’s Human Resources Strategy for Researchers.
