BAM advises the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency on the approval of offshore wind turbines

Berlin, 27.10.2016. The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und-prüfung (BAM) and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) have signed a joint administrative agreement for undertaking feasibility checks of offshore wind turbines. Within the scope of the agreement, BAM advises the BSH on all constructional engineering issues of the facilities and provides recommendations for approval.

Offshore wind farms are an important cornerstone of the German energy policy and are expected to progressively contribute to the energy supply. The Federal Government envisages that about 15,000 megawatts of offshore wind energy will be fed into the German power grid by 2030, enough to provide about 15 million private households with green electricity. To promote this goal, BAM and BSH have agreed to cooperate more closely in the approval process for offshore wind turbines.

"As a senior scientific and technical federal institutefederal authority, we support the Federal Government’s renewable energy expansion targets", says BAM President Prof. Ulrich Panne. "Due to its partnership with BSH, BAM can use its expertise in safety of structures to help shape the approval of offshore wind turbines more efficiently and ensure the safety of the facilities at the same time".

Under the framework of the feasibility checks, BAM advises BSH in all constructional engineering issues. The emphasis here is on the verification of geotechnical foundations, steel structures and connections where so-called grout connections (pipe-in-pipe plug-in connections) are regularly used. These are often under water and make special demands on the construction work due to high material loads.
