Dr. Jill Harvey was awarded a Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdoctoral researchers. Prof. Martin Wilmking and his team in the working group “Landscape Ecology and Ecosystem Dynamics” will host Dr. Harvey for a two-year research period. Jill is from Victoria, Canada, and will work on the resilience of forest ecosystems during her research visit.
Dr. Jill Harvey https://botanik.uni-greifswald.de/landschaftsoekologie-und-oekosystemdynamik/per... is a geographer by training. She obtained her B.Sc. in 2004 and went on to work as an expedition leader and lecturer on expedition ships in the Arctic and Antarctic. Jill completed her M.Sc. in Geography (2011) from the University of Victoria (Canada). During her PhD programme, Jill visited the University of Colorado (USA) for a research fellowship. In 2017, Jill was awarded her PhD in Geography for her research on the dynamics of fire, insect outbreaks and drought in dry conifer forests of interior British Columbia, Canada. Her main research areas are forest ecology, disturbance dynamics and climate change.
Existing contacts with Prof. Wilmking’s working group, such as within the large structured research networks of BaltRap https://www.io-warnemuende.de/projekt/167/baltrap.html and the DFG-Research Training Group Response https://biologie.uni-greifswald.de/forschung/dfg-graduiertenkollegs/research-tra..., and also international research experience influenced Dr. Harvey’s decision to hold this fellowship at the University of Greifswald. “The Greifswald tree-ring laboratory has an excellent international reputation, making it a desirable location to tenure this award,” says Jill Harvey. “Cutting-edge equipment alongside a constructive and friendly working atmosphere support my research activities.” Jill moved to Greifswald with her husband and young daughter and has felt welcomed and well integrated with the help from the International Office https://www.uni-greifswald.de/international/internationales-greifswald/internati.... “My daughter Marina is already singing German children songs she has learned at daycare,” adds Jill smiling.
