TU Berlin campus in Charlottenburg to be remodeled at a cost of around 12 million euros – public “knowledge trails” planned
An open, accessible and transparent center for experience and exchange for educational and science tourists, visitors to Berlin and of course members of the University. Working closely with the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, TU Berlin seeks to open up, modernize and transform its campus in the heart of City West, forging closer connections to the surrounding urban area.
The costs for the measures to transform the campus into a forum for knowledge transfer and a center for new research topics are estimated at around 12 million euros. Funding will be provided by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s GRW program for boosting regional economies. Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf has transferred building ownership for the construction measures to TU Berlin.
In the future, the campus will offer a high quality experience, not only for students and staff but for the public as well. This is to be achieved through the construction of an exhibition pavilion and a transparent route guidance system inviting visitors to discover the campus by exploring its knowledge trails. An app is also planned to enable visitors to find out more about the campus and the exhibitions staged in the pavilion and outdoor spaces.
Sustainability goals: just one of the global issues affecting society to be explored in the “knowledge pavilion”
All phases of the project are being developed in a participative, transdisciplinary and sustainable approach. The concept and the construction process as well as subsequent operations will draw upon the findings of a range of different teaching and research projects. The pavilion will serve as a place where global issues, such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), can be given expression, made experienceable and opened up to discussion. This process of exchange and transfer is intended to make knowledge gained in teaching and research accessible to the general public and at the same time provide new ideas from society to enrich scientific and academic work.
Exhibitions and public events
The pavilion will stage both permanent and changing exhibitions. Students and teachers have already come up with ideas and concepts for the content and design of the pavilion. A key element will be TU Berlin’s impressive 200-year-old mineralogical collection. The Science Gallery Berlin, a member of the international Science Gallery Network for knowledge transfer in society and of which TU Berlin is a partner, will create subjects for discussion through a program of changing exhibitions. This on-campus exchange is intended to promote knowledge transfer and generate new research topics as well as create a modern form of science communication. The exhibition program will be complemented by public events.
Presentation of first ideas in May 2021
The aim is to complete everything by 2025/2026. From the end of May 2021 onwards, the results of previous and scheduled teaching and research projects will be presented for discussion in “UNI_VERSUM” in the foyer of the Main Building on Straße des 17. Juni (formerly the location of the TU Uni Shop). The Science Gallery’s first program will use pop-up exhibitions and a range of different events to explore the topic of cohesion.
