International Symposium on Grapevine Breeding and Genetics takes place July 10th-17th in Landau, Germany

Dipl.-Biol. Stefanie Hahn Pressestelle
Julius Kühn-Institut, Bundesforschungsinstitut für Kulturpflanzen

Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) is hosting the XIII International Symposium on Grapevine Breeding 2022 in the German wine-growing region Palatinate. To register, please visit the official website at https://gbg2022.julius-kuehn.de. Early-bird-rate is available until April 15th.

(Siebeldingen) Quote: „We at the Julius Kühn Institute Geilweilerhof are proud to host this international conference and provide a networking platform for breeding researchers, grapevine breeders and wine growers from all over the world“, says Dr. Reinhard Töpfer, head of JKI’s Institute for Grapevine Breeding. The Institute under the roof of the German Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants named after the 19th century agronomist Julius Kühn is located in Siebeldingen, in the wine-growing region called Palatinate or Pfalz in German. The conference will take place in the historic art nouveau building „Festhalle" in Landau, a city located on the southern wine route in Germany.

The conference will highlight current research on grapevine and wine in eight sessions and poster presentations. The following topics will be covered:
    • genetic resources,
    • phenotyping,
    • biotic stress,
    • abiotic stress,
    • grape and wine quality,
    • big data management,
    • breeding, and
    • novel technologies.

The XIII International Symposium on Grapevine Breeding and Genetics is held under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (IOV).

A technical tour on July 13 will comprise excursions to the JKI research facilities an gene-bank at Geilweilerhof, and to the researchers at DLR „Neustadt an der Weinstraße“ or local wineries combined with wine-tastings. The conference dinner will be held at Annweiler, a city towered by the medieval Trifels castle, where the English king Richard Lionheart was imprisoned in 1193-94. Post-conference tours on July 16 and 17 will explore other famous wine regions of Germany.

Information on the history of the GBG-Symposia:
In the 1970s, Professor Alleweldt, back then head of Grapevine Breeding Institute at Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen, Germany, proposed a conference series, that would bring leading scientists in grapevine genetics and breeding research together every four years at different winegrowing regions around the world. After the first „International Symposium on Vine Breeding“ in September 1973 at Geilweilerhof, the following symposia were held in Bordeaux, Davis, Verona, Siebeldingen, Yalta, Montpellier, Kecskemet, Udine, Geneva, Beijing, and Bordeaux. The 360 participants of the GBG2018 voted for Germany to host the next conference in2022. After almost half a century the congress is returning yet again to its roots at the Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen, now home to the breeding and plant protection researchers of the Julius Kühn-Institute (JKI), the Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants.
