A weekend dedicated to jazz

Melisa Berktas Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Hochschule für Künste Bremen

In April, you listen to jazz in Bremen. Every year, the jazzahead! Festival takes place in the Hanseatic city. Around the world's largest gathering of the jazz scene and beyond, the jazz department of the Hochschule für Künste (HfK) Bremen is also planning a variety of events. On April 28th and 29th there will be concerts and jam sessions. On April 30th, the HfK will host a workshop for aspiring jazz musicians. The weekend will be rounded off by the jazzahead! CLUBNIGHT, also taking place on April 30th.

Start of the Resonanzen music series

The jazz weekend will kick off on April 28th with the start of the Resonanzen music series in the HfK's newly opened Musikkeller in Dechanatstraße. There, among others, Professor Markus Schieferdecker, German bassist of Modern Creative Jazz, will perform jazz improvisations in dialogue with pianist Oliver Poppe. Schieferdecker has been a professor of jazz double bass and electric bass at the Hochschule für Künste, where Poppe also teaches, since 2020. The concert begins at 9:15 p.m. Tickets (while stocks last) are available at the box office.

HfK Late Night Jam Session by the Cole Porter Band

The Cole Porter Band's HfK Late Night Jam Session will be held on April 29th in the Musikkeller. Each jam session has an opening band. This time the session will be opened and accompanied by the HfK Cole Porter Tribute Band, a student band led by Professor Schieferdecker. Tickets are available at the box office. Admission is 3 euros. The concert starts at 9:30 p.m.

    Jazz Workshop

On April 30, 2022, starting at 10 a.m., the HfK Jazz Department will host a workshop for prospective students.
Future students will be offered the opportunity to intensively explore their instrument with the support of HfK lecturers. "Among other things, questions about different playing techniques, styles as well as band playing will be addressed," said Professor Schieferdecker, who is also involved in leading the workshops. The participation fee is 25 euros.

    jazzahead! CLUBNIGHT

The jazz department of the HfK Bremen is part of jazzahead! With the CLUBNIGHT, young artists make their debut as part of the new HfK series NEW FACES. The 20-year-old bass student Magnus Bodzin will kick off the event with his quartet, followed by the Christopher Olesch Quartet. The event starts at 9 p.m. Admission is 15 euros.

    Jazz Club KING GEORG

The jazz musicians of the HfK will soon be heard more often in Cologne. Professor Schieferdecker has initiated a cooperation with the internationally renowned jazz club KING GEORG and its program director Martin Sasse. As part of the music series for student jazz musicians from the HfK, the HfK artists will regularly hold concerts (including streaming) at KING GEORG. The Magnus Bodzin Quartet will kick things off on June 22nd. "We are very pleased and grateful for this great support from the Jazz Club KING GEORG," said Professor Schieferdecker

    Registration for the workshop

Registration for the Jazz Workshop is possible via email (kbb-musik@hfk-bremen.de). For the registration, participants are asked to state their postal address and the instrument/subject which they are interested. The payment of the participant fee will be made by invoice.

About the Bremen University of the Arts / Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK)

The Hochschule für Künste Bremen is the leading art academy in Northwest Germany. With more than 1,000 students, 88 professors and 162 lecturers, the HfK Bremen offers a unique portfolio of courses and guarantees individual support for students in workshops, laboratories and studios as well as practice rooms and concert halls. The central quality of the HfK Bremen is the interdisciplinary connection of the different disciplines between art, design and music, which is developed in joint projects. The HfK Bremen has two locations, one in a historic warehouse building in the Überseestadt, the former docklands of Bremen, the other in a classicist building in the historic center of the city.
The university and its activities, ranging from exhibitions and interventions in public spaces to concerts and festivals, is a pillar of Bremen's cultural offerings (about 400 events at the HfK Bremen) and offers students many opportunities to test their skills in front of an audience.
As a historic Hanseatic city, Bremen has developed civic engagement, democratic traditions, idiosyncrasies and independence over centuries and is regarded in Germany as a pioneering and experimental city that is open to the new. Bremen is very popular among students as a place to live.
