Supporting New Ventures

Jens Fischer Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit

The University of the Arts joins the BRIDGE Network.

Studying at a university equips young people with plenty of know how for their chosen careers and often times stirs their desire to pursue their dreams as an entrepreneur. But going from studying to starting an enterprise or venture can become a challenge. One might have a promising idea or concept for a startup, but lack information on practical steps to realise those. Some enterprising people might also run short on the professional knowledge in managing a business that is required for a rewarding future as a self-employed professional or the successful launch of a startup. The BRIDGE Network has been founded to provide such information to students and graduates and to support them in these phases of transition. The network is set up to become the central contact point on setting up a business for students, alumni and people involved with universities in Bremen. The University of the Arts (HfK) Bremen has joined the effort in April 2022. One of our goals has been to integrate the existing initiatives at the HfK in the field into a more comprehensive forum and share their expertise. This step answers the strong interest among the HfK community in realising entrepreneurial ideas in the creative and cultural sectors of the economy. Launching businesses from within the HfK is also a crucial building block in the range of services and benefits offered by the University.

Dr. Martin Heinlein, the executive director at BRIDGE, praised the participation of the HfK in the network: “We are more than happy to have the HfK Bremen on board at BRIDGE and look forward to new opportunities in cooperating in the support of launching new ventures. We are well aware that many people at the HfK are interested in starting their own enterprises. They now can draw on the offerings available to everybody involved with BRIDGE. They will therefore strengthen teams working on startups with a university background by applying their own creativity.”

BRIDGE is providing support free of charge and constantly expands the tools and means of support available at the network. The initiative has already started initial conversations on ideas and concepts for new ventures at the HfK. These will be followed by consultations and assistance with development programs in progress. The program is offering founders workshops, seminars, further training and lectures to provide valuable tipps and insights tailored to the individual needs of participants at their stage of building up their enterprises. BRIDGE also informs participants about fellowships and organises competitions to provide founders opportunities to master challenges, exchange ideas and assert themselves. The BRIDGE team connects people in the program to the right contacts in the startup scene in Bremen to tackle specific questions in fields such as taxes, insurance, acquisitions, billing, legal protection, branding, etc.

BRIDGE aims to improve the environment for new ventures at the participating universities and strives to support ideas with a strong potential to support a business from an early date. BRIDGE is offering a workshop for startups twice a year to qualify specific projects. These sessions involve small groups of up-and-coming founding teams and are led by docents with real-world, professional experience to turn ideas for a business into viable concepts for an enterprise.

BRIDGE is consulting with some 160 new ventures in Bremen and offers more than 50 events on setting up a business, drawing more than 1200 participants every year. On average, the BRIDGE Network has noted 23 new launches coming out of the universities in Bremen per year. The network has also raised more than 9 million euros from the federal EXIST program.

The competition “CAMPUSiDEEN” offering awards totalling more than 20.000 euros rounds out the year of event. The competition has received more than 750 applications since 2003.

BRIDGE is sponsored and supported by the HfK Bremen, Bremen University, City University of Applied Sciences Bremen, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, Jacobs University Bremen and the Bremer Aufbau-Bank GmbH. Further information at: www.bridge-online.de
