End of Year Exhibition at Digital Media and Integrated Design

Graduates at the University of the Arts Bremen show their final projects from November 11 – 16, 2022 at the BLG-Forum / Award Ceremony for the Frese-Design-Preis

Graduations from studies are milestones in people´s lives. At this point, students end a period where they could learn the skills of their trade or profession in sheltered surroundings and in courses that facilitate experimentation, creative freedom and a focus on design and aesthetics. Then the challenging times commence when on has to blaze their path in a professional existence determined by commercial considerations. But in the end, departing from an university is just an intermediate step in a lifelong process of learning and growing that the current graduates at the Departments for Digital Media and Integrated Design at the University of the Arts (HfK) Bremen are celebrating as their “topping out.” And that has become the motto for their extensive farewell-show: the End of Year Exhibition at the HfK.

The students chose a site in the immediate vicinity of the HfK in the Überseestadt: the BLG-Forum. 33 graduates will play on that stage for the arts from November 11 – 16 by adapting the space to their works. That is the way they celebrate their transition from studies to the next phase of their lives. The are having a topping out party!

On show are books, fashion designs, spatial installations, paintings, drawings, films, photography and much more. There will also be performances to experience. Growing out of the spirit here at the HfK, this had to become a colourful and diverse paradise for the arts where the exploration of individual forms of expression choosing from a wide variety of styles and disciplines is blossoming free of stifling preconceptions.
The works in the exhibit tackle important societal issues in their forms and contents—at times in a more aggressive manner, then more subtle or abstractly. The range reaches from sustainability to climate change and resource management on to discourses on gender and racism. But graduates also deal with their own transitions into adulthood, popular culture, their search for identity, the myth of a private pool and the ephemeral qualities of photography.

A highlight of the opening at November 11, 6pm, will be the award ceremony for the Frese-Design-Preis, that is endowed with 10.000 Euro. The prize has been awarded to young designers at the HfK Bremen since 2014 and helps graduates at the Departments for the Arts and Design to become noticed with their work on a national and international level. The prize also supports their efforts as designers and helps them on their way to a professional career.
