Newly established: Joint Lab for Future Libraries & Research Data

Dr. Sandra Niemeyer Kommunikation und Marketing
TIB – Leibniz Informationszentrum Technik und Naturwissenschaften / TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology

Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HsH) and TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology pool their expertise on research data, data science and the future-oriented development of scientific libraries

Working hand in hand, Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HsH) and TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library establish and develop a Joint Lab for “Future Libraries & Research Data”, in time for the 2nd quarter of 2023. This is where the expertise of the two institutions is to be combined, creating a future-oriented innovation cluster.

The Joint Lab provides a framework for stepping up cooperation between the partner institutions. The focus is clearly on the topic of research data and data science, as well as the future-oriented development of scientific libraries. This also includes targeted training to attract young talent from the relevant Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes offered at the HsH.

“We are delighted to be able to consolidate the successful cooperation between the HsH and TIB. Thanks to our joint focus on data-oriented issues, we are closing a gap in Lower Saxony’s scientific landscape when it comes to applied information science,” stated Professor Dr Ina Blümel. In July 2019, she was jointly appointed Professor of Linked Data in Information Science by TIB and the HsH. Even at that time, her goal was to develop and expand additional cooperative ventures. Together with TIB, she is now accomplishing this by establishing the Joint Lab “Future Libraries & Research Data”.

Driving the transformation of research data, research information, open access, open science and an open science culture

The HsH facilities involved in the initiative include the Data|H Institute, which is currently being founded, the Filminstitut Hannover and the HsH library. Ina Blümel, who is responsible for coordinating the lab, looks forward to the task: Our previous experience in collaborative projects in the fields of citizen science, OER (Open Educational Resources) and open data has been entirely positive. In addition to devising and acquiring further externally funded R&D projects, we will be able to specifically drive the transformation of the HsH in the areas of research data, research information, open access and open science, thanks to start-up funding from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.”

In its work, the Joint Lab “Future Libraries & Research Data” will also draw on TIB’s developments, such as in the context of open research information or the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI), which provides, links and sustainably offers research support services. The results will form the basis of discussions with other small and medium-sized higher education institutions in Lower Saxony.

The start-up phase for the Joint Lab runs over two years and is funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. The Joint Lab will be located on the Bismarckstraße Campus of the HsH, which is also home to the Data|H Institute, a spin-off of the HsH Research Cluster Smart Data Analytics.

About the Research Cluster “Smart Data Analytics”

Due to the economic and social importance of data, smart data has become one of the world’s key future issues. Access to data and the ability to provide and evaluate data in a goal-oriented way are decisive competitive factors in digital value creation. For this reason, the “Smart Data Analytics” Research Cluster brings together the HsH’s extensive methodological, technological, legal and application-related expertise in the area of smart data. The Research Cluster, founded in 2017, is currently being made permanent in the form of the Data|H Institute, which is now being established.
