Hochschule für Künste Bremen

On 8 July, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on 9 July, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Hochschultage, the University of the Arts (HfK) open house, will take place at and in Speicher XI and Speicher XI A in Bremen's Überseestadt. In addition to concerts, exhibitions and performances, visitors can experience what everyday life is like in the studios, workshops and ateliers. They can furthermore get insights into what studying at HfK is all about. Admission is free.

"The university’s open house tour offers a very good insight into the creative development processes of the students and lecturers who deal with current artistic, design and social issues," said Sue Wendlandt, alumna and event manager at the university. "We are particularly impressed by the diversity of the works, which are often also created in collectives," said Wendlandt.

Together with alumnus and event manager Fabian Brunke, student Slava Romanov and alumna Liza Kovalenko, she coordinates the Hochschultage. "Having a team of students and graduates design the curation of the Hochschultage allows for an exciting perspective and stands for a very participatory approach," emphasised Slava Romanov.

The intersection of art, politics, philosophy, design and science shows the potential of the HfK. With an interdisciplinary approach and by experimenting with different materials, media and working methods, exhibition concepts, installations, performances, lectures, fashion, films and video artworks as well as concert programmes have been created. The topics reflected on are diverse: sustainability and the deconstruction of social norms are addressed as well as flight and police violence.

The Hochschultae are undoubtedly one of the highlights of the HfK's calendar of public events. Every year, between three and six thousand visitors take part in the discoveries in Speicher XI and now also in the new building complex Speicher XI A, getting to know budding artists, designers and musicians and gaining an overview of current trends in art, music, digital media and design. For those interested in studying, the Hochschultage also offer detailed information and counselling about the study programmes and the application and admission procedures. The official start of the Hochschultage will be the opening event on 8 July 2023, at 2 p.m. In addition to speeches, the university prizes will be awarded for outstanding achievements in the study programmes.

The event will take place both inside and outside Speicher XI, as well as in Speicher XI A. During the tour, studios and workshops can be visited. The Hochschultage bring together the perspectives of the entire university community. They showcase the artistic practices, musical diversity, discourses and projects of the HfK Bremen in all their facets.

About the University of the Arts Bremen / Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK)

Around 1.000 students from more than 50 countries, 89 professors, 83 staff members in administration and over 150 teaching associates make the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK) a vibrant place.

The HfK is a university of seeming opposites. While deeply rooted in the region, the institution is extremely international in its basic orientation. The HfK is spread out over a number of locations throughout the city with significant differences among them, ranging from classicist to floating to contemporary. The HfK is an art university and a university of music at the same time. These parameters form the foundations of the university and create a framework that allows to strengthen artistic development among its students on a collective, as well as on the individual level.

The range of studies offered include Fine Arts, Integrated Design, Digital Media, as well as Musical Education for Artists and Teachers. Since 2020, the HfK also offers a post-graduate programme of study, an art- and science-based PhD programme with a special focus on Integrated Design and Digital Media.

Open courses, shared conduct of exams, as well as work shops, studios and projects on specific themes all are focussed on fostering dialogue and collaborations. With some 400 events annually the HfK is a pillar of cultural and communal life in the City of Bremen
The relationships among members of the university community, their multi-facetted collaborations, the close knit support provided to students by faculty and staff, as well as the plethora of regional and international cooperations help students grow into strong and distinct personalities. All of this produces works with high impacts on society at large.
