An international hub for cutting-edge research: The Bayreuth Polymer Symposium 2023

    From September 17 to 19, 2023, the University of Bayreuth will host the 18th Bayreuth Polymer Symposium (BPS), an international meeting place for leading experts in the field of polymer research. 200 scientists from 13 countries will discuss current findings and trends, from basic research to high-tech applications, in lectures and discussion panels. Representatives of the media are most welcome at the opening event. They will have the opportunity to talk directly with the participants and organizers of the conference.

    Opening event:
    Prof. Dr. Hans-Werner Schmidt, who has led the BPS as chair of Macromolecular Chemistry I for 30 years, will open the conference on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. in building NW II, lecture hall 18, on the university campus. The subsequent plenary lecture by Professor Joseph De Simone from Stanford University/USA will focus on the potential of industrial 3D printing for the realization of global sustainability goals. The plenary lecture by Professor Dr. Markus Antonietti from the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam will then focus on new ways to degrade plastics using organic catalysis. At 7:30 p.m., the traditional opening evening "BPS - Beer, Pretzel, Sausage" will begin in the foyer of Building NW II.

    Since 1987, the Bayreuth Polymer Symposium has been held every two years on the campus oft he University of Bayreuth and promotes scientific networking between universities, non-university research institutes and industry. This year, polymer researchers from world-leading institutions in North America, Asia and Europe will again come to Bayreuth as speakers. The conference programme reflects the interdisciplinary character of polymer science, in which different research fields of chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering science interact. It will focus on topics that currently play a central role in interdisciplinary research at the University of Bayreuth: additive manufacturing processes in 3D printing, tailored biopolymers for new medical and technical applications, controllable transport processes in macromolecules and their relevance for battery research, targeted fine structuring of material surfaces, and the use of polymer structures for transport and storage of energy.

    The Bayreuth Polymer Symposium 2023 is organized by Bayreuth professors of macromolecular chemistry (Seema Agarwal, Andreas Greiner, Hans-Werner Schmidt, Meike Leiske, Mukundan Thelakkat), physical chemistry (Georg Papastavrou, Markus Retsch), polymer engineering (Holger Ruckdäschel) and biomaterials (Thomas Scheibel). It is supported by the Bavarian Polymer Institute (BPI) as well as by the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centers SFB 1357 "Microplastics" and SFB/TRR 225 "Biofabrication" at the University of Bayreuth.
