Dr. Andrea Koschinsky, Professor of Geosciences at Constructor University, has been elected to the Review Board for Atmospheric, Marine and Climate Research of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Over the next four years, the scientist will be involved in deciding what research is carried out in this field in Germany.
The DFG review boards are responsible for the final scientific evaluation of the submitted research proposals, the reviews and the review process. They also make the proposal for approval or rejection to the DFG's final decision-making body.
Every four years, around 150,000 scientists vote to decide on the composition of the committees. With a funding volume of around 3.9 billion Euros and 31,750 funded projects (as of 2022), the DFG is by far the most important source of research funding in Germany.
"I am delighted to have been elected and am aware of the responsibility it entails," said Andrea Koschinsky, who has been teaching and researching at Constructor University since 2003, primarily on marine research issues. She worked for the DFG for a long time in various advisory commissions on oceanography and earth system research.
"What appeals to me about the new role is the opportunity to get things moving and influence decisions in the interests of the best possible science," says Koschinsky. The three-member review board for atmospheric, marine and climate research will start work in April. The scientists will not only identify projects worthy of research but will also be involved in the further development of the DFG's funding programs and in the discussion of funding policy issues.
