A new landmark study by Academy of International Affairs Fellow, Professor Reza Hasmath, provides a candid account of how the Chinese citizenry currently thinks about the world, inclusive of the European Union as a whole, Germany and France individually.
Key findings include:
• Chinese citizens perceive China as the most influential international actor, closely followed by the United States. The EU as a whole is seen as almost four times more influential than France and Germany respectively.
• Russia is considered to be the most trusted and important nation to China's long-term future. Japan and the United States were perceived to be the least trustworthy. The EU as a conglomerate is seen as having greater importance to China’s future in the next decade, more than two times Germany and France individually.
• Respondents view USA as the actor most likely to engage in a military conflict with China in the next decade. In contrast, the possibility of a military conflict with Germany and France is seen as extremely unlikely.
• The Chinese public express a positive preference for expanding global economic cooperation, and technology/research collaboration. This is notably the case with Russia by a widespread consensus. Germany is seen as a strategic partner for technology/research collaboration more so than France (by a wide margin – more than double) or the EU as a whole.
• Despite strained relations with China in the 2020s, the EU, France and Germany remain popular destinations for studying abroad, outward tourism and a destination for potential international employment opportunities. France is the number one destination for outward tourism. Germany is the number one destination for potential international employment opportunities.
• Chinese citizens want China to play a more active role in resolving conflicts around the world, including the Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Palestine conflicts. This can have notable implications if Chinese strategies vary from EU ones.
• Citizens overwhelming want a reunification with Taiwan resolved through diplomatic means rather than a military one. However, if USA is involved in this process they would be substantially less supportive.
The study draws upon findings from the second iteration of the Chinese Citizens’ Global Perception Survey (CCGPS) in 2024, conducted by AIA Fellow, Professor Reza Hasmath. CCGPS 2024 is a national survey looking at mainland Chinese citizens’ perspectives on China’s current relations with global actors.
