Economist Hélène Rey was awarded the Bernhard Harms Prize by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy today. She received the prize during the Kiel-CEPR Conference on Geoeconomics (https://www.ifw-kiel.de/institute/events/conferences/3rd-kiel-cepr-conference-on...). Rey is one of the world's most influential scholars on international macroeconomics and finance. The 10,000 Euro Bernhard Harms Prize, one of Europe's leading awards in the field of international economics, has been awarded by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy since 1964.
Rey is the Lord Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School. She has special emphasis on financial stability, international capital flows, exchange rates, and the international monetary system. Among her most influential academic achievements is the development of a “global financial cycle”. Rey showed that national monetary policies are often constrained by global financial conditions, even for countries with flexible exchange rates. This contribution has far-reaching implications for both economic theory and practical policy-making.

In an increasingly interconnected and uncertain geopolitical landscape, the role of rigorous economic research is more critical than ever in understanding and guiding sustainable policy decisions,” said Hélène Rey in Berlin.

With an exceptional talent, a pronounced scientific curiosity, and great tenacity, she has not only succeeded in questioning some supposed certainties of international macroeconomics but has contributed to a better understanding of the global financial system,” said Moritz Schularick, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, on the occasion of the awarding ceremony.
The Bernhard Harms Prize
Since 1964, the Kiel Institute’s Bernhard Harms Prize (https://www.ifw-kiel.de/institute/events/prizes-and-awards/bernhard-harms-prize/) has been awarded to distinguished scholars (https://www.ifw-kiel.de/institute/events/prizes-and-awards/bernhard-harms-prize/...) for their outstanding research in international economics as well as for exceptional efforts in advancing global economic relations. This year, the award ceremony was again held in Berlin. It took place on October 17, 2024, in the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the 3rd Kiel-CEPR Conference on Geoeconomics. The prize is endowed with 10,000 euros and is named after Bernhard Harms, who founded the Kiel Institute in 1914.
Recent winners of the Bernhard Harms Prize are Gita Gopinath (2023), Lord Nicholas Stern (2021), Carmen Reinhart (2018), Marc Melitz (2016), and Abhijit Banerjee (2014).
