The Digital GreenTalents Jury has selected 20 exceptional young researchers from 13 countries as the winners of the Digital GreenTalents Award 2024. They were honoured at the Digital GreenTalents Award Ceremony, a hybrid event held on the second day of the Digital GreenTech conference.
Berlin, 21 November 2024 – Hosted by moderator Julia Vismann, alongside Dr. Rainer Müssner from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the ceremony featured inspiring videos from the awardees where they answered questions such as "What fascinates you most about your research", "Which social issue do you want to tackle through your work?" and "If you could have a conversation with any German researcher, who would it be and why?".
Jury members also offered their perspectives on the importance of the work being done by the Digital GreenTalents. Dr. Christiane Plociennik, from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, emphasized the interdisciplinary nature of their work: "This interdisciplinary work is always the hardest. Those who have done it, know it. But we have to do it in order to save the planet in the long run."
Sebastian Guckelberger, representing jury member Anja Eimer, spoke about the urgent issues facing the water industry in the context of climate change and pollution. He encouraged the Talents to stay optimistic despite these challenges: "The other side of challenges are opportunities. We need people to take action and I think our Digital GreenTalents possess the vision, skills and the commitment to take these opportunities."
And Alexander Bonde, president of the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt sent greetings from the COP29, where he highlighted the importance of collective action in line with Dr. Rainer Müssner who urged the Talents to "Act jointly".
The Ceremony concluded with the official presentation of certificates to the Digital GreenTalents 2024. In her acceptance speech, awardee Sophia Botsch reflected on the significance of the moment: "The climate crisis is daunting by itself, but the antidote to despair is action. I am so grateful for everyone who continues to act, bringing hope to all of us here."
As part of the award, the Digital Green Talents 2024 get a fully funded research stay in Germany in 2025 at a renowned institution of their choice as well as participation at the SpringSchool in May 2025.
