DFG Funding Atlas 2024 Confirms TU9 Universities' Leading Position
TU9 Universities confirm their excellent reputation as universities with strong third-party funding. According to the recently published DFG Funding Atlas, TU9 Universities were able to claim more than a fifth (21%) of all DFG grants across all scientific disciplines in the period from 2020 to 2022, thus defending their position compared to the last survey.
In the engineering profile area, over 50 percent of the DFG funding volume was acquired by TU9 Universities. Once again, all nine universities are in the top 11 in this area. In the research fields of construction and architecture (66%), fluid mechanics, technical thermodynamics and thermal energy technology (66%), mechanics and constructive mechanical engineering (63%) as well as production technology (62%), TU9 Universities were able to attract well over half of all DFG funding. This is also reflected in the granting per researcher. Here, eight TU9 Universities achieved above-average funding amounts.
The engineering sciences at TU9 Universities also score highly thanks to their independent research network profile, which stands out nationwide thanks to regional and supra-regional cooperation relationships (see Fig. 6-13, DFG Funding Atlas 2024).
At European level, almost a third (29.5%) of Horizon Europe funding in Germany goes to TU9 Universities. The TU9 share of ERC grantees at German universities is also high at 27%. In the engineering sciences, as many as 56% of ERC grantees choose a TU9 University. The excellent international reputation of TU9 Universities is further underlined by the fact that in engineering sciences, more than half of the funded researchers choose a TU9 University as their host institution via the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (52%), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD; 54%), and the ERC (68%).
The DFG Funding Atlas, which is published every three years, provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of the key figures on publicly funded research in Germany. The current Funding Atlas was presented on November 25, 2024 at a joint press conference of the DFG, the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), and Stifterverband.
About TU9
